Mom-Recommended Toothpaste For Kids (6 Months To 5 Years Old)

How much is too much when it comes to toothpaste for kids? Children below 3 years old should only use a smear of toothpaste (the size of a grain of rice), while kids ages 3 to 6 should only have a “pea-sized amount” of toothpaste.

That’s according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Dental Association (ADA), and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD).

In a previous article on SmartParenting.com.ph, dentist Mary Lee April Roxas-Cagatin, D.M.D., recommends brushing with non-fluoridated toothpaste “once the first tooth erupts at around six months of age.”

She adds, “Babies that young don’t know how to spit it out yet. When they already know how to spit, at around age 2, you can slowly introduce them to regular toothpaste. Kiddie toothpaste only serves to jumpstart the habit of putting paste on the brush and not much else.”

Dr. Roxas-Cagatin says you can combine the regular toothpaste and the sweet toothpaste with helping your child have a smoother transition. But she stresses to give only “a smear or a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste.”

Toothpaste with fluoride does strengthen tooth enamel, helping teeth become resistant to tooth decay. But in kids whose teeth have yet to develop, ingesting more than the amount of fluoride can result in “discoloration and dental fluorosis.”
