  • Busy women (ahem, moms!) often tend to neglect some basic skin care -- the skin on your lips, that's what! Sure, you put on lipstick almost every day to add color to your tired face, but there might be consequences to that if you're not giving your lips much-needed TLC. Make sure they're healthy before you pucker up.

    1. Exfoliate
Experts recommend to exfoliate lips every other day during the cold season, regularly at least once or twice a week, or as needed (you don't want to bruise your lips with too much scrubbing) to remove dead skin and leave your lips soft and smooth. When your lips are smooth, your lippie stay on longer.

Female Network also suggests using a wet, soft-bristled toothbrush to gently scrub your lips. But why spend when you can make your own? It's so easy. Simply mix a teaspoon or two of brown sugar with honey or natural oil, such as olive oil or sunflower oil, in a small, clean jar or plastic container. Gently massage the mixture on your lips in small circular motions. It will also help lighten dark spots on the lips.

    2. Moisturize
Technically, you should do this every day before you put on lipstick -- and even if you don't plan to color up those puckers. If you want just a hint of color, go for a lip gloss instead of lipstick, which also helps you achieve supple, soft lips. However, don't overdo it. Plus points if your chosen brand has SPF for sun protection!

Remember to wait a few minutes before applying lipstick, though. Cosmopolitan Philippines suggests applying lip balm early on in your beauty routine so that by the time you're ready to apply your lipstick, your lip balm had already set properly. If it still feels a little sticky, take some tissue and blot your lips to get rid of excess oil.

    3. Choose your lippies wisely.
Whether you're buying lip balms, lip liners, lip shiner and glosses, make sure they're made by reputable brands. Good lippies aren't necessarily expensive. Apply lipstick testers only onto the back of your hand (it has the closest skin tone to you face), unless the makeup counter offers disposable applicators.

And mind the expiration dates! Yes, makeup expires, too! Lipstick contains water, making it prone to bacteria buildup, so you should check your lip products regularly. Change in color, texture, or smell also indicate that it has seen better days. Lipstick usually lasts one to two years depending on the brand. Lastly, don't forget to remove your lip color before going to bed.
