What to Wear to Your Child's Graduation: Do's, Don'ts, and Musts

Here’s a fashion designer's take on how parents can dress smartly while keeping the focus on the graduate.

Graduation is a proud milestone not only for the graduates themselves but also for the family and friends who supported them every step of the way. As parents, seeing our children move up and achieve academic success is a joy. Naturally, we want to look our best on this special day to show pride in our children and be presentable as we meet their teachers, principals, and other important figures who have been part of their educational journey.

Graduation Day fashion: A parent's guide to dressing well

Many parents even choose to buy new outfits just for this occasion. But what exactly should parents wear to graduation? Smart Parenting asked Janno Novenario, a fashion stylist, creative director, and entrepreneur, for his expert advice on how parents can look presentable without overdressing. Here's what he had to say: "Aim for a polished but not overly formal look."

According to Janno, the goal is to dress smart without going overboard. The ideal graduation outfit strikes a balance between formal and casual, falling into what is often referred to as smart casual or business casual.

"You want to look put-together and respectful without looking like you're heading to a black-tie gala," he explains.

Here are five golden rules to keep in mind when choosing an outfit for graduation:

  1. Avoid anything too extravagant, revealing, or distracting.
  2. Neutral or pastel colors are excellent choices for a clean, elegant appearance.
  3. Fit matters—nothing too tight, too loose, or uncomfortable.
  4. Comfortable shoes are essential, especially since ceremonies often involve standing, walking, and long periods of sitting.
  5. Avoid stealing the spotlight—this day is all about the graduate.

As Janno puts it, "You want to look your best, but you don't want to overshadow the graduate, do you?"

Outfit ideas for proud moms

Janno suggests outfits that are both elegant and comfortable for moms.

1. Belted dress: This style creates an hourglass shape and can be easily reused for other occasions. A collared button-down dress, like the one shown below, exudes a professional vibe and is also suitable for work. Tip: Pair it with a nice pair of earrings and open-toed heels for a more casual finish.

2. Shift dress: Timeless, sophisticated, and perfect for indoor and outdoor ceremonies. Its loose fit can keep you cool if the venue might be warm. Shift dresses also tend to be forgiving on the figure, if it's a concern.

3. Midi or maxi dress: These picks would go great for schools that require a modest hemline. A low heel or even flats pair well.

4. Blouse and skirt: Stylish separates are a versatile combination that can be dressed up or down, depending on the setting. Mix what's already in your closet with a new piece, if you don't want to spend too much. Or borrow from a friend if you prefer not to shop.

5. Tailored trousers: Ideal for moms who prefer pants but still want a polished look. Also great for women who don't feel comfortable in skirts and dresses, or if you have to chase after younger siblings around during the graduation ceremony.

6. Jumpsuits: Wide-leg versions, which Janno describes as "sophisticated but never boring," are favorites because they create balance with the mommy-pooch.

Outfit ideas for proud dads

For fathers, Janno suggests thinking of semi-formal looks that strike a balance between style and comfort.

1. Dress shirt: A crisp dress shirt or button-down is a failproof choice. A polo shirt is also acceptable, especially for outdoor ceremonies.

2. Blazer: The tie is optional. Depending on the venue and dress code, dads can elevate their outfit with a tie.

Another hack: Bring a suit jacket but make sure your outfit works with or without it. When you arrive at the venue, decide whether or not you want to wear the jacket.

Overall, graduation attire for parents should be polished but not overly formal. Avoid scene-stealing colors and textures. "Semi-formal is a step up from casual but less stiff than black tie," says Janno. "It's about looking smart, sophisticated, and proud without appearing overdone or awkward."

After hearing Janno's advice, I realized that comfort should be my priority. As a mom, I would choose breathable, moveable clothing—especially considering the weather during graduation season. I would also avoid anything sparkly, flashy, or revealing because I want my children to feel comfortable introducing me to their teachers and friends.

I want them to be proud to see their parents making an effort to be present and look suitable for their special day, not trying to impress others, but celebrating them wholeheartedly.

With these tips, parents can attend graduation ceremonies with style, dignity, and love. Let's honor our children's milestones by looking and feeling our best.
