  • We’ve seen a growing interest in tiny houses over the past few months. Moms and dads are realizing that when it comes to owning a home, bigger is not always better.

If you’re looking to build a tiny home, take inspiration from this container house located in Lumban, Laguna. Owned by the Elbo family, it offers a sweeping view of the Sierra Madre mountain ranges and is located right beside a river.

“’Yung parents namin naka-acquire ng lot beside ng river. It just so happened na naglagay ng river control so parang maganda siyang tayuan [ng bahay] kasi maganda ‘yung view,” shares Christian Elbo in an interview with Summit Video Originals.

Since the lot spanned 150 square meters, their family thought of building a cottage or a small, simple home where they can all hang out with friends and other relatives. Christian convinced his family to build a tiny house instead, since he was such a fan of the movement.

Fortunately, his brother, Andrew Elbo, who owned a construction company, was game. “Maganda ‘yung view, nakaharap sa silangan. Lagi kasing sinasabi ng mother namin na maganda ang bahay kapag nakaharap sa silangan,” Andrew says.

They decided to build a container style house after seeing samples online. They added a loft and designed the kitchen and bathroom to be outside the home to maximize the space.

Christian describes the concept akin to buying a condo unit but taking it outside. “But the construction is like a container [home],” he shares.

It took them three months to build the tiny home and spent a total of Php600,000 for the construction. “Dun sa mga planong gusto magpagawa pero tight ang budget, you might want to consider this type of house,” Christian says.

“Unlike kapag nagpagawa ka ng bahay, it can cost you around 1.5 million and up, ito magandang alternative para sa mga nangangarap magkabahay,” he adds.
