To some, two years can just be a short passing of time. But for April Perreras, two years was enough to turn her whole life around--she went from battling breast cancer to surviving cancer, and today, advocating fitness and strength.

In October 2021, April discovered the first lump that led to her breast cancer journey. She went through three surgeries, 22 rounds of radiation, and a mastectomy (removal of both breasts) in July 2022. Now, she celebrates her first year of being cancer-free!

It seems easy to summarize her breast cancer journey in just two paragraphs, but April’s courage, strength, and commitment led her to her healing today. She was declared NED (No Evidence of Disease) in October 2022, and she is now a CETI-Certified Cancer Exercise Specialist.

Life changes

Breast cancer surely changed April and her family’s life. But April fought hard to make sure that the only changes breast cancer brought to them were positive changes.

“I had a double mastectomy with direct-to-implant reconstruction last July 13, 2022. And I’ve undergone 22 rounds of radiation therapy from September to October,” she said. All her medical procedures were done at the Asian Breast Center.

Though filled with optimism, April admitted that the numerous procedures made it hard for her to recover, “It took time to recover but I was able to reclaim my body and my strength just a few months after through exercise.”

'I’m no longer waiting for life to happen; I’m actively shaping it. I’m embracing the beauty of the present moment, the joy that can be found in even the smallest victories,' —April Perreras

She added, “I’ve discovered the power of positive thinking, the strength that comes from exercising my body, and the importance of nourishing myself with mindful eating.”

“Survivorship has taught me to cherish each and every day, to find gratitude in the simplest of things, and to never take my health for granted. I’m no longer waiting for life to happen; I’m actively shaping it. I’m embracing the beauty of the present moment, the joy that can be found in even the smallest victories,” April shared.

During her breast cancer journey, April never forgets to mention the strong support she got from her husband, kids, and whole family. She shared how cancer changed her perspective on time with family, “It made me realize the importance of making every moment count. I now make a conscious effort to be fully present with my family, to engage in meaningful conversations, and to create lasting memories together.”

“Cancer has taught me to value quality time over quantity and to savor the simple joys of everyday life,” April said.

It also changed how she views self-care, “Self-care has also taken on a whole new meaning since my cancer journey. I have come to realize that taking care of myself is not a luxury but a necessity.”

“Cancer has taught me the importance of self-compassion and listening to my body’s needs. I have learned to set boundaries and say no when necessary, in order to preserve my energy and maintain a healthy balance in my life. Going through cancer has instilled in me a profound appreciation for the present moment and the relationships that matter most,” she added.

April’s realization is one we can all relate to, “It has taught me that life is precious and that self-care is not selfish, but an act of self-preservation and love.”

Dark days

Even April, who appears to be always positive, goes through dark days when she feels overwhelmed.

“Yes, even as a breast cancer survivor, there are still moments when I feel overwhelmed by the weight of all that I have been through—the medical & surgical procedures, the medications and their side effects, and the emotional toll it can take. Coping with these feelings is an ongoing process, and everyone’s journey is unique,” April shared.

She remembers her ‘secret’ during these days, “I find solace in talking to my 'pillars of support': my husband, my family, my closest friends, and my breast friends. Sharing my concerns and fears helps me gain perspective and reminds me that I am not alone.”

To breast cancer warrirors, 'My message to you is this: you are stronger than you think, and you are not alone.' —April Perreras

April emphasized the importance of healing mentally and emotionally, “Self-care plays a crucial role in coping with the challenges of cancer. I prioritize activities that bring me joy and provide a sense of peace. Whether it’s exercise, a quiet moment with a cup of coffee, or simply taking time for myself, these moments of self-nurturing help me regain balance and recharge.”

Message of hope

Lastly, Smart Parenting asked April what she migh want to say to women, especially mothers, who are currently battling breast cancer.

“To women, especially mothers, currently battling breast cancer, I want to offer my heartfelt support and encouragement. I understand the immense physical, emotional, and mental challenges you face. My message to you is this: you are stronger than you think, and you are not alone,” April said.

Her message of hope continues, “Lean on your support system—reach out to family, friends, or support groups who can provide a listening ear or a shoulder to lean on. Seek out resources that offer guidance and information to empower you on your journey. Always advocate for yourself. Take each day as it comes, and be gentle with yourself. Allow yourself to feel the full range of emotions, knowing that it’s part of the healing process. Surround yourself with positivity, whether it’s through affirmations, uplifting stories, or connecting with others who have triumphed over breast cancer.”

April added, “Through the challenges, remember to be kind to yourself, celebrate the victories, and cherish the moments of joy. You have the strength within you to navigate this journey and emerge stronger on the other side. Keep fighting, keep believing, and know that you are never alone.”
