One of moms’ favorite form of self-care is watching Korean dramas or movies. And while watching your favorite series, we’re sure you’ve also imagined meeting and interacting with your favorite actors and actresses.
Well, one Pinay actress in South Korea is actually living that dream! Cherish Maningat, 34, is a theater, film, and TV actress from the Philippines who’s been based in Seoul, South Korea since 2006.
If her face is super familiar, that’s because she made a guest appearance in the widely popular K-drama Romantic Doctor 2. She played the mother of a Korean kid who is also a victim of domestic violence.
Apart from that drama, Cherish also portrayed roles in K-dramas like Heart Surgeons, Beautiful Love, Wonderful Life, and movies like My Little Hero, Showdown, Missing, The Bacchus Lady, Stand By Me, and Romang.
In an interview with Summit Original Videos, Cherish says her role in Romantic Doctor 2 was especially memorable because she got to interact with its stars, Lee Sung Kyu who played Dr. Cha Eun Jae and veteran actor Han Suk Kyu who played Kim Sa Bu.
“For a TV drama, medyo mahaba ‘yung exposure ko rito. It was really fun and at the same time, I got to know si Ms. Lee Sung Kyung,” she says.
“It’s just hard to imagine a big star like her to approach someone who is unknown like me… I think that is still one of the most memorable things that I treasure,” Cherish adds.

On the other hand, she got to show off her acting chops in the 2017 movie Deok Gu (English title: Stand By Me), which she says is one of her most challenging roles so far. She had a supporting role as Vanessa, the mom of the titular character, Deok Gu.
“I got to work with one of the best actors, veterans in Korea which is Lee Soon Jae. That was very memorable for me because of the big role that I got. And at the same time, I got to do it with him na sobrang galing na actor,” Cherish says.
Despite Koreans being strict when it comes to drama and movie production — “They are really strict with the time, shots, ‘yung mga minor details in the background” — Cherish is holding her own and enjoying every minute of her work.
“Until now wala pa naman sumisigaw sa akin ng, ‘Ano yan?’ Kasi usually parang [ang] pinakamarami ko nang take is three takes,” she shares.
