Every Mom's Fear: Teacher Celine Bares Battle With Breast Cancer

Few experiences can scare a woman, particularly a mother, more than finding a lump in her breast and worrying about what it might mean. This fear is entirely valid, as breast cancer can be life-threatening. While treatments like surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy can be painful, the most profound distress often stems from the thought of leaving their child behind. Such is the case of mom and content creator Celine Cornejo, widely known as Teacher Celine.

Celine Cornejo shares her breast cancer journey

Teacher Celine recently opened up about her breast cancer journey on Instagram, sharing a video along with a heartfelt caption. "I have been keeping a secret for months. I have breast cancer," the content creator revealed.

Reflecting on her diagnosis, Teacher Celine recalled, "To confirm my cancer diagnosis and staging, I had to brave a PET-CT scan. I had to fast in preparation for the glucose analog radioactive tracer. I was terrified on the day of the scan. I cried before going inside the machine."

Upon returning home, she expressed, "I cried again as I couldn’t be with my husband and children for a day. I was still radioactive from the tracer. Being away from them even for a day was so heavy on my chest. Time with them was more important than ever. All the things I take for granted came rushing in as confusing thoughts. I imagined not being there for them."

She continued, "I thought about Calix, who has not even hit puberty yet. I thought about Alonzo, who is the sweetest boy I know. I also thought about Cassie, who just turned one. And finally, I thought about John, with whom I have so many dreams and aspirations. My initial thought was my absence at that moment. Have the boys had dinner? Does Cassie have milk?"

And then, the thought that I dread the most kept creeping back. Will my young kids grow up without a mom? Will John be alone in raising our beautiful family?

After a couple of days, the results were in. It was worse than expected: stage IV breast cancer with multiple bone metastasis. I cried once more."

The fear is too real, as breast cancer is the leading cause of new cases in the Philippines, with 27,163 diagnoses and 9,906 deaths reported annually for both sexes, according to data from the Philippine Cancer Society in 2022.

That said, health experts consistently emphasize the critical importance of early detection in the treatment of breast cancer, as many cancers can be prevented if diagnosed at an early stage.

In a different Instagram post, Teacher Celine expressed her hesitance about sharing her breast cancer diagnosis. She recounted experiencing many personal firsts following the news, including her first severe anxiety attack, during which she couldn’t eat for three days and cried herself to sleep.

However, she found the courage to inspire others, stating, "I’m ready now. I want to share my journey. I don’t know where it leads, but I hope it helps me and others heal—emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually."

Her post is especially timely, as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Known for her engaging YouTube videos, Teacher Celine uploads preschool and kindergarten lessons centered on phonics, counting, and values through storytelling. After stepping away from a decade-long teaching career to care for her two sons, she launched her channel in 2019, blending her passion for teaching with play-based learning.

She has three children: Calix, Alonzo, and Cassie.
