It's not necessarily a bad thing.

People dislike being bored. Studies say we'll do anything to avoid it. Nothing is worse then, than realizing that boredom has crept into your marriage. When every day with your spouse feels repetitive and unsatisfying, it forces you to confront the question: what needs to change? Or, should you even change it at all?

Why You Might Be Bored in Your Marriage

The start of your relationship was likely full of excitement, with a strong desire to be together all the time—hello, honeymoon phase! But over time, those intense feelings often soften, sometimes making you feel like things have become a bit boring.

This is a common sign that your relationship is shifting from passionate love, which tends to be more short-lived, into compassionate love, which is deeper and longer-lasting.

Passionate vs. Compassionate Love
Passionate love is marked by excitement and intense emotions. During this stage, everything about your partner feels new and fascinating as you get to know one another. You may even find yourself idealizing them, finding all of their habits endearing and overlooking any flaws. However, it's normal for these feelings to fade or diminish over time.

On the other hand, compassionate love is deeper and more intimate, often seen in couples who have been together for years. This type of love is built on trust, commitment, and genuine care.

Compassionate love goes beyond just feeling sympathy or empathy; it involves taking action to help ease another person's suffering. Partners at this stage are already so comfortable with each other that this comfort might be mistaken as boredom.

Other Reasons Why Relationships Grow Boring
Boredom in relationships can also stem from factors beyond the natural shift from passionate to compassionate love. Several other issues may contribute to the loss of excitement in your romantic relationship. Here are a few reasons why you might suddenly feel bored:

  • Different interests: When you and your partner lack shared interests or goals, it can be difficult to maintain a strong connection. Yes, it's important to maintain your own individuality, but taking time to engage in your partner's interests can help strengthen your bond.
  • Lack of deep conversations: Communication is vital in any relationship. While you don’t have to dive into deep topics all the time, if you’re not addressing important matters like life goals, feelings, and opinions when the opportunity arises, you may find yourselves drifting apart over time.
  • Sacrificing your own goals: If you've set aside your own interests, dreams, or goals to prioritize your partner's, it's only a matter of time before you start feeling frustrated or resentful for neglecting your own needs.
  • Not putting in effort: Keeping a relationship exciting requires attention, interest, and affection. If you stop prioritizing each other’s feelings, fail to spend quality time together, or neglect each other’s needs, disconnection can easily set in.

It's perfectly normal for relationships to become more stable and softer over time, which some may see as boring, but it's not! However, factors like poor compatibility, lack of communication, and lack of effort can lead to actual boredom and strain in the relationship.

What to Do If You're Feeling Bored in Your Marriage

A study published in the International Journal of Psychology found that boredom in marriage can negatively impact both individual and relationship well-being. "It can harm physical and mental health, weaken intimacy and commitment, and increase the risk of infidelity or divorce."

There are strategies that you can do to bring excitement and energy back into your boring relationship. Before that, ask yourself these questions:

  • Are you bored, or are you just comfortable? If you're confusing the two, it might be worth spending some time thinking about your expectations and what you hope to get out of a relationship.
  • What aspects of your relationship feel humdrum? Is it the sex? The conversations? Knowing what areas you'd like to focus on can give you a sense of direction when coming up with solutions.

While it's easier to look outward for distractions, philosopher Søren Kierkegaard suggested looking inward first, deepening connections and rediscovering what may be missing within yourself and your relationship.

Once you better understand the problem, you might consider implementing one or more of the following solutions.

Strategies for Reigniting Your Marriage

Change How You Think

Research indicates that cognitive reappraisal can be a powerful way to change how people view love and their relationships. This approach involves reframing situations to alter your thoughts and feelings. For example, you can focus on your partner's kindness, sense of humor, or dedication, and reflect on how these qualities strengthen your relationship. By shifting your perspective to appreciate these specific traits, you may find yourself seeing and valuing your partner in a new light.

Reignite Your Connection

Return to the basics and revisit the activities you enjoyed at the start of your relationship. Plan frequent date nights to reconnect and share meaningful conversations, aiming to recapture the excitement of your early days together.

Keep things fresh and surprising with thoughtful gestures, such as tickets to a favorite event or a spontaneous trip. The goal is to carve out dedicated time for each other, free from distractions, to strengthen your bond.

Counseling

Consulting a therapist can help address relationship issues, especially if boredom stems from deeper problems like poor communication or negative thought patterns. Counseling often strengthens bonds, improves communication, and increases intimacy and satisfaction.

If your lack of interest extends beyond your relationship to life in general, it may signal an underlying issue like depression, anxiety, or chronic stress. Consider seeking help from a healthcare professional if these symptoms persist.

Just because the initial excitement of a relationship fades doesn’t mean love is gone. When boredom creeps in, you can invest in the relationship or live with boredom. If you decide to invest, focus on finding new ways to reconnect and strengthen your bond. Living with boredom can lead to further dissatisfaction and unhappiness over time.
