At 19 years old, Alexandra Eala is already making history in tennis, becoming a trailblazer not only for herself but also for the Philippines and young athletes everywhere.

"I would love to think that I make a difference," Alex shared when asked about her growing influence back home. "The only thing I can do to give back to my country is to help inspire—to inspire change, to inspire people to pick up a racket, to watch more tennis, to watch more women's tennis."

Alex's impact is undeniable, with Filipinos rallying behind her, staying up until midnight over the past week just to watch her play.

Despite the expectations, the young athlete doesn't feel compelled to lead the nation to sporting glory. She simply hopes that people recognize her success as the result of hard work and 'grit,' just as she has earned everything else in her career.

"I want the kids at home to see more [of] my attitude and the grit I have on court, more than the results that I get," Alex said in an interview.

She also emphasized that inspiration can come from anywhere, not just from well-known figures.

"There have been so many role models in my life. Inspiration doesn't always have to come from someone big who did it in the Philippines," explained Alex.

"For example, young kids in the Philippines, they don't need to take inspiration from me. They can take inspiration from anyone they want. And they can take inspiration from other things, which is what I did growing up."

Though she exited her dream run at the 2025 Miami Open after losing to American tennis star and world No. 4 Jessica Pegula in the semifinals, Alex's journey remains nothing short of extraordinary.

What has been central to Alex's success is her ability to embrace each step of her journey, viewing every milestone as part of the process rather than an endpoint. This mindset has been key in helping her rise to become a legitimate threat in the WTA's upper ranks.

Alex Eala's Path to Tennis Success

Alex's tennis journey began at four years old, when she started playing to bond with her late grandfather, Roberto Maniego, a club player who coached several of the Eala cousins. She was also inspired by her older brother, Miko, who later went on to play for Pennsylvania State University.

As her talent blossomed, it was clear that to take her game to the next level, she'd need to train abroad. At just a preteen, she was faced with the daunting challenge of leaving home and flying halfway across the world. But when the Rafa Nadal Academy—led by her tennis idol, Rafa Nadal—offered her a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, she knew it was a chance she couldn't let slip by.

Alex opened up in an interview, "It came as a shock because I was young. I was 13 when we made that decision. My parents sent my brother along with me, so I still had family close by."

"It was definitely a big decision for me, for us. But as soon as I heard that, I jumped at the opportunity because I knew I had to get out of the country eventually to improve," she added.

Alex has consistently credited her family, especially her dad, Mike, for her success, once describing him as "a great role model."

"My family should take credit for the foundation that they laid out before they sent me there. But, of course, the academy was able to build on that foundation in such a way that I'm able to be where I am now," the young athlete said.

"I think the combination of everything that I've been through since I started tennis is what has led to this moment and what has led to me having all these opportunities."

As Alex mentioned, inspiration comes from many sources, and for her, it was family, experiences, and the people who've guided her. This diverse foundation has fueled her growth, proving that greatness isn't about one path but about learning from every step along the way.
