The Department of Health on Friday, November 12, 2021, advised parents to be extra careful when bringing their kids to public places in response to a viral report of a 2-year-old who allegedly caught COVID-19 after a mall visit.
Health Usec. Rosario Vergeire was asked to comment on the report, which she described as "unfortunate," adding, "its exact cause will remain multifactorial and uncertain."
"More establishments were opened, but we advise parents and guardians to take extra precaution if they will bring their children with them," Vergeire said.
"Factors such as adults from the same household going to work and bringing the infection home could also be a possibility."
The doctor's post, which had gone viral, said she diagnosed the child with COVID-19 after the toddler visited a mall three days prior.
Vergeire encouraged eligible individuals aged 12 and up to get vaccinated against COVID-19 to achieve the "cocoon effect," which protects those who had not been jabbed.
She also reminded parents and guardians to avoid bringing children to crowded places. "Kapag nakita natin na parang crowded na ang lugar, huwag na nating isama ang ating kabataan," Vergeire told reporters.
"Let us remember, the objective of having children out is for them to be able to get sunlight, to have exercise, but not to go into these crowded malls," she added.
Metro Manila mayors will revisit guidelines allowing children to go outdoors and enter malls following the incident, Interior Sec. Eduardo Año told PNA.
