Iya Villania and Drew Arellano's Son Leon, Now Covid Positive
  • Iya Villania shared through Instagram on Wednesday, January 12, that their second child Leon has also started showing symptoms of Covid-19.

“I knew chances were slim but after almost a week, our little kuya (as well as our ate that takes care of Alana) has joined me on the dark side. Leon woke up with a fever and also [vomiting emoji] this morning.”

Earlier this week, pregnant Iya shared on Instagram that she and husband Drew Arellano tested positive. She said in the same post that they were “hanging onto that little chance that maybe the kids are spared.”

What Covid-19 isolation and quarantine look like in the Arellano home: “dark” side and “clean” side."

Iya and Drew have been isolating together in what Iya calls the “dark” side. Drew was the first one to test positive for Covid-19 and Iya followed suit three days ago.

Because Alana’s yaya also tested positive, Iya and Drew decided for Drew to leave their isolation room and join the “clean” side (where the rest of the household who are not sick stay) so that he could help care for their 18-month-old daughter Alana, who, as Iya shared previously, is most affected by her mom’s isolation.

“Thank goodness he tested negative in 2 antigen tests showing that he was no longer infectious,” Iya said about Drew.

    Tricky to count isolation days

Iya pointed out how tricky it is to count isolation days for families like theirs whose symptoms start days apart. DOH requires positive cases who are asymptomatic or have mild to moderate symptoms to isolate for 10 days. But then close contacts are also required to quarantine for seven to 14 days depending on vaccination status, beginning on the last day of exposure to a positive case.

“This covid is so tricky ah! It’s not as simple as positives with positives and negatives with negatives. The moment someone tests positive and is put in a room with other positives, the most recent positive’s day 1 becomes everyone else’s day 1.”

“Before having Leon join the dark side and bringing us all back to day 1, Drew and I had to decide for him to join the “clean” side since he was already on day 7 (although I brought him back to day 4).”

“This is so so tricky!!! It’s almost like it’s better if everyone just gets sick nalang so that you can all start and end together, but then you also don’t want to risk it and still hold onto that hope that others are spared coz you don’t know how bad it might actually hit them.”

Staying optimistic for the rest of the household

Iya chooses to look at the bright side of their tricky situation and remains hopeful for the rest of their household.

“Still hoping for the best for Alana, Primo and our 2 other ates who are keeping the home from falling apart while I’m isolated.”

“If anything, given the situation, I still thank God that He allowed for Drew and I to get thru this first so that we could already be on the road to recovery to care for the little ones we love when it’s their turn…”

“On the bright side, we might not have the vaccine for the kids yet but at least they’ll now develop the antibodies.”

She prays the kids get spared from harsh symptoms and also remembers families who are in the same tricky situation.

The Philippines continue to see a spike in COVID-19 cases since the end of the holiday season. On Jan. 10, 2022, for the first time since COVID-19 hit the country, the Philippine Department Of Health recorded over 30,000 new COVID-19 cases.

Given the rising number of cases, DOH has also released a guide on what parents and guardians should do if they spot COVID-19 symptoms in their kids. (Read here)
