  • As they say, time surely flies!

Valerie Concepcion's daughter, whom she had at the age of 16, graduated from high school on June 9, 2022.

That day, the 34-year-old actress took to Instagram to congratulate her 17-year-old unica hija, Heather Fiona Galang. (Valerie's real last name is Galang.)

Valerie shared in her congratulatory post several photos and videos, taken from Heather's graduation at Miriam College and their celebration.

She wrote in the caption: "Right from when you were still a kid until now, you have only given me reasons to hold my head up high. I am so proud of you, my Dearest Heather and I am wishing you all the success and happiness the world has to offer."

She added, "Good luck on your new journey, anak ko. ILYSM and I'll always be here for you. That's a promise. With love and pride today and always, MOM."

    She also used the hashtags #MyDearestDaughter #HappyGraduation #Congratulations #ClassOf2022 #MiriamCollege 6.9.2022.

Back in 2019, Valerie recalled in an interview on ABS-CBN's daily talk show Magandang Buhay the time she was pregnant with Heather.

She said she was 16 at that time, and her parents didn't even know she had a boyfriend, adding: "'Tapos biglang buntis na nga. Habang buntis pa ako, kinukulong ako sa bahay kasi natatakot sila na baka makipagtanan ako. Kasi na-in love talaga ako nung time na 'yun sa tatay ng anak ko."

Valerie admitted she was expecting a fairy tale ending with Heather's father, who's also her first boyfriend. While the guy offered marriage, Valerie's parents said no because she's not of legal age yet.

She remembered crying her eyes out and wondering aloud: "Una iyak-iyak lang ako. Hindi ba dadating 'yung guy? Hindi ba kami ise-save? Hindi ba kami kukunin?" Sadly, the guy never came back and never got to meet their child.

That's when Valerie realized she had to be both mother and father to Heather. She told herself, "Kung wala akong aasahan, kailangan sa sarili ko, magtrabaho na ako. Kasi may buhay na akong susuportahan e. So, automatic, 'yung mother's instinct ko lumabas.

    Raising a teenager

Valerie said in her TV interview that she's always been open to Heather about everything, which probably explains why her daughter doesn't keep any secrets from her.

"I'm so thankful," she said. "At least maga-guide ko s'ya nang tama. Mas malaki 'yung tsansa na hindi nya maulit 'yung mga pagkakamali ko sa buhay."

She pointed out, "Kinatatakutan ko na maging teenage mom din s'ya. Kasi ako napilitan akong mag-mature agad, e. Hindi ko na-enjoy yung pagiging teenager. Hindi ko na-enjoy yung mga date-date na 'yan, hindi ko na-enjoy 'yung mga labas-labas with friends.

"Napilitan akong maging responsable agad. 'Yun 'yung ayoko sana, na hindi s'ya manakawan ng panahon, 'yung ma-enjoy n'ya 'yung normal na life."

Valerie's wish just came true! Heather is now a high school graduate. Valerie herself earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 2018. The following year, on December 29, 2019, she got married to her boyfriend of two years, Francis Sunga, who works as a court clerk in Guam.
