Rica Peralejo and the Bonifacios

Smart Parenting's Editor-At-Large Rica Peralejo, her husband Joseph Bonifacio, and their two kids, Philip and Manu, have been out and about exploring the country this summer.

From their relaxing trip to Negros Occidental and fun-filled adventures in Zamboanga, #TheBonis capped their March escapade with a road trip up north in Luzon. The whole travel experience was also a way for Rica to celebrate her birth month last March.

The mom of two shared snaps from their trips to La Union, Ilocos Sur, and Ilocos Norte.

Saab and Jim Bacarro

Saab Magalona and her husband Jim Bacarro, with their two super cute kids, Pancho and Vito, also squeezed in a quick pool and beach trip to Morong, Bataan.

Elated by their experience by the sea, Jim says, "I think we need to make this a weekly thing." Well, that's not at all a bad idea since a study suggests that being near a "blue space" can actually improve your mental health.

Tips for family trips

Like with everything, planning in advance is the key to making your family vacation as smooth and hassle-free as possible.

Here are five things to consider when going on a trip with your kids:

1. Book your stay in a family-friendly hotel or resort.

Some key aspects to look at are if the hotel offers family rooms, kid-friendly facilities such as a playground or kiddie pool, and attractions such as a themed swimming pool or restaurant.

2. Be informed about airline and hotel child policy.

If you're flying, make sure you're familiar with the airline's child policies. Children can share seats with paying adults on some carriers. Consider the baggage allowance as well as any fragile cargo. Consider these same factors when booking a hotel.

3. Prepare an itinerary.

Plan on the tourist spots you intend to visit. But don't be too reliant on your list. You may not push through with some of your plans, but that's okay. When traveling with kids, also prepare for the unexpected.

4. Always research on health and safety protocols

While travel restrictions are easing, protocols against COVID-19 still remain. Ensure to check with the place destination their travel requirements.

It also pays to continue practicing basic health protocols like wearing of face mask and following physical distancing when necessary.

5. Have fun!

Be in the moment with the family. They say that more than the material things we buy for our kids, it's actually the happy moments during vacations and bondings that become their "happiness anchors" as they grow old.
