'Walang Pinipili, Treat Everybody The Same': Why Iza Calzado Is Passing On This Lesson To Daughter

As parents, one would often believe that the default role is to teach and guide their children through the winding paths of life. But soon, you'd realize that more often than not, it's actually the opposite. That the children become the teachers to their parents.

In an intimate revelation, celebrity mom Iza Calzado shares the profound lessons she's learning from the littlest love of her life – her daughter Deia.

"Motherhood is a journey of surrender," the Cosmopolitan's Women of Influence 2024 awardee begins, her voice a blend of awe and humility.

The 41-year-old mom reveals the biggest lesson she has received so far from her daughter was "about learning to let go and trust the process." Something probably many parents would relate to. Unlearning the notion that moms and dads should always be imposing and in control is not always easy.

Fortunately for Iza, her daughter has become a beacon of learning, teaching her the virtues of patience and the essence of freedom. "She's teaching me to be more patient, as the years go by. I can already imagine it," Iza shares with a laugh that we know would resonate with every parent's knowing nod.

And though she knows it by concept, it’s as if the notion of unconditional love only began to make more sense to Iza now that she's a mother. With all the compassion she could muster, Iza shares in awe how “the greatest gift is the unconditional gift that she has blessed me with.” “She gives me a great purpose, which is very clear," Iza happily notes.

It's evident that Deia has not only captured her mother's heart but has also become the celebrity mom's shining north star, guiding Iza towards a life lived with fulfillment.

What Iza Hopes to Influence her Daughter on

As a parent, Iza vows not to impose anything on her child. The actress is firm in her parenting philosophy that if life were a movie, she's the film crew and her daughter is the director of her own life.

But if there's anything she wants Deia to take from her, there are only two things:

1. For Deia to grow up with a strong sense of her own individuality so that she can confidently “make decisions for herself”. With this, Iza hope that, in turn her daughter will have her own mark of influence in her own circles later in life.
2. Second is for Deia to always carry with her kindness. This is Iza’s ultimate prayer for her child: “to be as kind as possible to everyone, yung walang pinipili - kung sino mayaman - it’s just to treat everybody the same.”

Sharing the latter, Iza can’t help but look back on how that is something passed on by her own father.

"It's something I learned from my dad. His words, his example to this day serve as a compass for me on how to treat others," Iza reflects. She recalls how her father's unwavering kindness and respect towards everyone, regardless of their social status or background, left an indelible mark on her own values.

Iza's reflections on motherhood serves as a reminder that while parents strive to guide their children, it is often the children who teach us the most valuable lessons – lessons of patience, unconditional love, and the importance of living in the present moment.
