Whether in academics, sports, or just life and beyond, all parents want their children to succeed. Some areas can be more challenging than others, like math or reading. The popularity of Kumon in Manila is growing as it continues to be the trusted method of supplementary learning by parents and educators alike.

What Is Kumon?

You’ve probably seen the iconic blue and yellow-lined bag from one of your child’s classmates during pick up time. Chances are, you might have even taken up classes yourself. In any case, Kumon has been around for as long as you can remember. But what exactly is it and how did this foreign-sounding methodology make its way to local shores?

Toru Kumon was a Japanese high school math teacher who wanted to instill the value of self-learning to his son, Takeshi. He wrote numerous calculation problems on loose-leaf paper for his son to solve. The method was so successful that by sixth grade, Takeshi was solving calculus problems. This paved the way for Kumon, a learning method used by so many today.

Kumon was first established in the Philippines in 1996. Presently, Kumon is located in 50 countries around the world with more than 4 million students enrolled in over 24,700 Kumon centers.

The trademark of Kumon is their carefully crafted worksheets in the areas of math and reading. The worksheets contain exercises from counting to calculus, and phonemics to Shakespeare. A student is first given a placement test to assess his level. The student is given worksheets to complete every day, with each subject requiring 30 minutes to complete. The end goal is for students to develop focus, speed, and skill-building through repetition.

Benefits Of Kumon

Whether to support your child’s readiness for kindergarten or fill in the gaps in learning, Kumon can be a great way to help develop skills during their formative years.

Kindergarten readiness

One of the most common questions parents of preschoolers ask is, what should my kindergartener know on the first day of school? Kumon can help your preschooler foster skills such as following directions, working independently, and sticking to a routine that will all contribute to long-term academic success.

Supplemental education

It’s common for students to struggle in a particular subject if their study time at school is limited. Kumon may be a way to help your child develop a strong foundation with the fundamentals needed for more complex lessons as they progress through each grade level. Since Kumon is tailored to the specific needs of the student, they can go at their own pace and fill in any learning gaps they may have. Doing worksheets daily will also build their “muscle memory” for a particular skill, whether in reading or math. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect.

Study skills

For students to achieve academic success, they must first develop habits that boost learning. For instance, skills such as time management, independence through self-study, focus, and concentration are not skills that children are born with. Doing worksheets independently may help your child establish a routine and teach them to be efficient with their time, even outside of Kumon.

Possible challenges

Like any other method, Kumon comes with its own set of drawbacks. It’s always a good idea to stay informed about the possible challenges and what to expect before deciding on whether Kumon is right for your child’s learning needs.

High cost

As with any enrichment program, the cost of Kumon in Manila is something to consider. Tuition fees will vary depending on age and location but will range from P2000-P2300 a month. In addition to increasing tuition fees and other costs for extracurricular activities like sports or art classes, adding an additional expense, even if it’s in the name of academic enrichment, might prove to be an additional financial strain for some.

High commitment

You also have to factor in the time it takes to take your child to a center and wait with them. This could mean that if the commute to the center is an hour, you would have to spend more time on the road than waiting for your child to finish his worksheets, since it only takes 30 minutes to complete. The recommended schedule is to visit the center twice a week and complete the rest of the worksheets at home on the other 5 days.

Level of difficulty

Another issue to consider is your child’s readiness for the program. Some children may not be able to keep up with the pressure and load of additional work, especially if it’s outside of schoolwork. This may lead to frustration and lack of motivation to learn, defeating the purpose of the program altogether. If your child is having a hard time, don’t force the method on them. Learning happens best in a positive and safe environment, so you may want to explore other options if Kumon is not working for your child.

From helping preschoolers gear up for big school to helping older students master necessary skills like basic math operations and reading comprehension, it’s no wonder Kumon in Manila has become one of the leading programs chosen by parents. With school just around the corner, there’s no better time than now to explore the option so your child can achieve greater success tomorrow.
