Parents would most probably know Roblox from their big kids who are spending hours upon hours on the online gaming platform. The popular online game has recently made news following a scathing report by Hindenburg Research branding the game a “pedophile hellscape.” The news has sparked serious concerns from both parents and investors. But what exactly does the report say? What are the basis of the allegations? And what does it mean for users? Here’s a breakdown.
What are the allegations against Roblox
What is Roblox
Roblox is an online game platform and game creation system that basically allows users to program and play games created by themselves. Launched in 2006, the platform offers free gameplay with in-game purchases using virtual currency called Robux. The platform has a daily average of 57 to 113 million players. In the Philippines, Roblox has 67.3 million daily active users, 80% of whom are under 16 years old.
This is not the first time Roblox’s safety issues have been highlighted. One mom in the U.S. posted on Facebook that her daughter’s virtual character in the app was sexually assaulted. Aside from virtual assault, other issues include trash talking and bullying among members, unmoderated chats that can include sensitive topics such as suicide and self-harm, and violent themes.
What is the Hindenburg Research
According to its website, Hindenburg Research is a U.S.-based firm specializing in forensic financial investigations, with the aim of providing “critical insights and evidence to the public, market and regulator to effect meaningful change.” The company has previously launched high-profile reports against companies like the Indian industrial tycoon and one of the world’s richest men, Gautam Adani, and electric vehicle maker, Nikola.
What are the allegations
On October 8, 2024, Hindenburg Research released a report titled, Roblox: Inflated Key Metrics for Wall Street and a Pedophile Hellscape for Kids. The report raised alarming concerts about the safety of children on Roblox, including the following:
Child abuse material and grooming: Hindenburg alleged that Roblox exposes children to grooming, pornography, violent content, and extremely abusive speech. According to the report:
- Roblox’s social media features allow pedophiles to target hundreds of children, with no up-front screening to prevent them from joining the platform.
- Before Roblox went public in 2018, a 29-year-old was caught with hundreds of hours of video footage involving minors on the platform.
- From 2019-2024, criminal indictments allege that sexual predators groomed children (ages 8 to 14) in-game, leading to cases of kidnappling and sexual exploitation.
- Users can sign up using the names of known sexual offenders.
- Users, even those listed “under 13” can easily access adult content, including games with adult themes. According to the report, “By merely plugging ‘adult’ into the Roblox search bar, we found a group called “Adult Studios” with 3,334 members openly trading child pornography and soliciting sexual acts from minors.”
Inadequate moderation: Hindenburg also accused Roblox of failing to enforce proper content moderation. They alleged that the company cut back on moderation spending to increase profits, despite being aware of the risks posed to children.
What Roblox says
In a news article, a Roblox spokesman said, “We totally reject the claims made in the report. Safety and civility have been foundational to Roblox since our inception nearly two decades ago, and we have invested heavily throughout our history in our trust and safety efforts.
“Every day, tens of millions of people of all ages have a safe and positive experience on Roblox, abiding by our community standards.
“We take any content or behavior on the platform that doesn’t abide by our standards extremely seriously and we have a robust set of proactive and preventive safety measures designed to catch and prevent malicious or harmful activity on our platform.”
What this means for parents
Given the seriousness of the allegations, it’s natural for parents to be concerned about their children’s safety on Roblox. Here are a few things you can do:
Understand the risks: Since the allegations point to serious issues related to child safety, including grooming, exposure to inappropriate content, and interaction with potentially dangerous individuals. Parents should always be aware that while Roblox can be entertaining, there are still risks involved in such online gaming environments.
Parental controls and supervision: Although Roblox offers a range of parental control features, such as account restrictions and content filters that should always be updated, parents should also ensure that their child’s game play, especially in-game interactions and communications are monitored.
Open communication: Always encourage and maintain open communication with your child. Ensure that they always feel comfortable and safe to talk to you about their experiences on the platform, and even other similar platforms. Ask them about the games they play, who they interact with, and if they’ve encountered any suspicious or uncomfortable situations.
Time limits: Setting screen time and game play limits, and encouraging breaks can reduce overexposure and help balance their online and offline activities.
Stay informed: It’s important for parents to stay informed and updated on news involving activities and platforms their children are interested in.
The Hindenburg report on Roblox has raised red flags about the safety and ethics of the platform, particularly when it comes to protecting young users. While Roblox has denied the claims, parents should remain cautious and proactive in safeguarding their children. By understanding the risks, setting clear boundaries, and staying informed, parents can help create a safer online environment for their kids, whether on Roblox or any other platform.
As Hindenburg said in their report: “We think Roblox has adopted the Silicon Valley approach of ‘growth at all costs’, whether by misleading or outright lying to investors about its key metrics or by opening its platform to dangerous predators and illicit content unsuitable for children.”
Ultimately, the responsibility falls on both companies and parents to protect young users in an increasingly digital world.
