Carlo Aquino's Ex-Girlfriend Trina Candaza On Co-Parenting: 'Kung Saan Nalang Okay Ang Lahat'

Trina Candaza painted a picture of what it's like to co-parent with her ex-boyfriend Carlo Aquino to their daughter Enola Mithi.

"Yung set-up namin, lagi kasi siyang nasa lock-in [taping] eh, so parang every month lang niya nakikita si Mithi. Siguro sa isang month, sunod-sunod na tatlong araw, tapos pasok na naman siya sa lock-in," Trina told Smart Parenting during the Pampers Up and Down Playdate on September 25.

The 26-year-old model added, "Nag-vi-videocall lang kami para kay Mithi, so halos everyday naman siya tumatawag."

Trina shared, their relationship is better now and that they have adjusted since they separated late last year.

Recently, Mithi celebrated her second birthday. Trina said, she asked Carlo to be there for their daughter. "Kinausap ko siya na sana buo kami, kasi parang birthday gift na rin namin kay baby Mithi na buo yung pamilya niya that day."

Carlo and Trina shared photos of the celebration on social media, and their followers cannot help but wish for them to get back together.

Trina said, she hopes that someday that Mithi will grow up having a complete family. While co-parenting works for them, there are also struggles that come with it. "Syempre mahirap siya, and of course gusto ko pa rin mabigyan sana ng whole family si baby Mithi, pero syempre minsan may mga hindi nagwowork, mas nagwowork kapag ganito yung situation."

For her, their current status is the best for their daughter. "Okay yung situation namin right now eh, so it's working, parang ako kung saan nalang okay ang lahat."

She has a message for solo parents like her. 

"Take it easy," Trina said. "Lalo na kung bagong break-up palang, syempre nag-aano ka, 'Bakit hindi nag-work?' 'Bakit hindi buo yung family namin,' 'Anong pwedeng gawin para mabuo ulit?'"

"Pero it takes time to talaga para mag-heal pa din. I think first yung healing, and then kung anuman yung mangyari, kasi ako, I don't close our doors para mabuo ang pamilya namin eh. So kung anuman ang mangyari, kami talaga o hindi, parang okay lang ako as long as nagagampanan namin yung responsibility namin for Mithi."

In a report by PEP.ph in July, Trina revealed on her Instagram stories that the reason for their breakup: “[B]ecause one of us wasn’t sure and didn’t understand the commitment of starting a family.”

How to have a healthy co-parenting relationship

According to Very Well Family, here are some signs that the co-parenting relationship is healthy and effective for the parents and the child.

1. The parents are willing to be flexible with one another

If both parents are accommodating changes in schedule or understanding of the arrangement, then it's working. 

2. Attend events without tension

During family affairs such as birthdays and school events, both parents are okay to be present.

3. Recognize that each parent is important

In a healthy co-parenting set-up, both parents are aware that each has a role to play in their child's development. One is not lesser or greater than the other.

For now, Trina said she ensures that Carlo is involved in Mithi's milestones and activities. 

"Sinesendan ko siya ng pictures, videos kasi of course he's the father, so kahit hindi man sya magtanong, sinesendan ko pa din siya, para alam niya yung nangyayari sa buhay ng anak niya."
