How would you react if your teenager asked for your permission to get a tattoo? Cherry Pie Picache's son, Nio Tria, initially got a resounding 'No' from his mom. But, eventually, the celebrity mom caved in and even got a matching tattoo with her son!
How Cherry Pie's son convinced her to get a tattoo
"Sabi niya, 'Kapag nagpa-tattoo ka, hindi na kita kakausapin,'" Nio said, recalling her mom's reaction when he first asked about getting a tattoo.
For her part, Cherry Pie explained that she has an established rule that Nio should first finish his studies before getting more freedom on doing the things he wants to do. Case in point, getting a tattoo.
"Ang deal ko sakaniya, kahit nung early teens niya pa. Right after college, then you can do everything that he wanted kasi talagang adult na siya, he would be responsible," the celebrity mom said in her Youtube vlog.
Despite the countless rejections, Nio, 19, persisted in asking his mom's permission. Until one time, Cherry Pie caved in and finally asked Nio what design he wanted for his tattoo.
"Eh ang galing ng sagot ko," Nio said, to which Cherry Pie agreed, saying, "Oo nga eh."
The design Nio had in mind had something to do with his mom. He wanted to get a moon tattoo, reflecting the moon phase when Cherry Pie was born.
The moon also holds a special meaning for the mother and son duo. "Lagi namin sinasabi, I love you to the moon and back," Cherry Pie shared.
Touched by her son's move to get a tattoo representing their bond together, Cherry Pie gave the green light to Nio to get inked. Furthermore, the celebrity mom was inspired and decided to get a tattoo herself.
"Ako naman I'm 51, may mga bucket list tayo eh. Pero natatakot ako [magpa-tattoo] lalo na nung nagka-anak. Kasi 'di ba sabi nila pag nagpa-tattoo ka hindi ka na pwedeng magdonate ng blood. So, pwede ka pala magdonate ng blod after 1 year." After doing some more research, Cherry Pie said, "Mag-52 na ako might as well sabayan ko na siya."
Cherry Pie also looked up the moon phase when she gave birth to Nio for her tattoo design. The two then ended up having matching tattoos!
Nio is Cherry Pie's son with her former partner Gary Tria.

Importance of mutual respect in parenting
Cherry Pie acknowledges that not all parents are open to the idea of letting their children get a tattoo.
"Before we did this, this was a responsible decision between me and Nio. Pinag-usapan namin 'to nang mabuti. I had to really make him justify," she emphasized.
The celebrity mom also reminds children about the importance of showing their parents respect despite having disagreements. "I'm just saying sa mga magulang, tsaka sa mga kabataan na nanunuod ngayon, diferrent strokes for different folks. May kaniya-kaniyang kayong rules sa bahay niyo. May kaniya-kaniyang pagdidisiplina ang mga magulang niyo. Respetuhan.
"Maybe not now, maybe in time and if you show them na responsible ka naman sa mga desisyon na gagawin niyo katulad ng pagta-tattoo then ayon, maybe eventually."
She adds, "We have to understand, we have to acknowledge and respect 'yung mga magulang natin kung ano man 'yung rules nila sa bahay natin."
In the end, Cherry Pie and Nio prove that the keys to a thriving parent-child relationship are open communication, mutual respect, and honesty.
"Kahit anong topic na hindi ko alam ang kailangan ko ng guidance, ng extra knowledge, pwede kitang puntahan," Nio said about his mom.
Cherry Pie Picache's parenting style
On parenting, Cherry Pie says it pays to be more understanding to your child as they grow up and build their own identity. She says, "Hindi naman tayo laging tama, hindi naman tayo perfect, so magandang bumaba sa mundo nila [ng mga anak]."
Lastly, honesty is always the best policy. "As a mother, honesty, for me, is very important. If not, it's the most important thing for me. At the end of the day, I will appreciate honesty. Kahit ikagalit ko, ikasama ko ng loob, basta maging honest ka lang. And everything, eventually, mapag-uusapan," she explained.
Parents' different opinions on tattoos
We previously asked parents on our Facebook page if they would allow their kids to get a tattoo.
We got mixed responses of yes and no in the comment section. Many said 'yes' with the condition that their kids had already finished school and already had a stable job.
Some leave the decision entirely to their kids once they're all grown up, believing that parents can only guide, not dictate, their children when the time comes. "Basta naman sa legal age why not? It's their choice. It's their body," one mom said.
There are also those who said, 'No.'
Disagreements can happen between parents and their children. There will be times when you don't want the same thing as your child. As Cherry Pie pointed out, in cases like these, it's best for both the parent and the child to resolve conflicts with an honest and open conversation.
Is it safe to get a tattoo?
If you're faced with the decision of whether or not to allow your child to get a tattoo. Here are some things you should know first about getting inked.
Tattoos are permanent designs on your skin. This is done by injecting the ink into the skin's top layer. Depending on a person's pain tolerance and placement of the tattoo, it can be painful. "Tattoos tend to hurt more around sensitive areas that have more nerves and less flesh," according to Healthline.
Tattoos are generally safe, but they can pose health risks, especially those with prior skin and allergy conditions. It is recommended to tell the tattoo artist any allergy you may have to prevent any adverse effects. Some tattoo artists also do patch testing, especially for those who will be getting their tattoo for the first time.
As another layer of safety precaution, ensure that you're getting a tattoo from a studio that is clean and sanitary to avoid any possible infections. It is also recommended to ask the artists about their processes.
Make sure that the studio practices single-use needles and ink. This is crucial to avoid cross-contamination among tattoo clients they are handling.
Since tattoos are done by poking the skin, flaking and scabbing are normal when healing after getting inked. However, an "infected tattoo will be warm, inflamed, and painful to the touch. The skin may also ooze pus or have a rash," Medical News Today explained.
If these are observed, immediately contact your doctor.
Getting a tattoo is a major decision and taking care of it is a lifelong commitment. If your teen is asking to get one, let them know about the pros and cons of getting inked.
