Last May 2023, we asked our readers to submit photos capturing the raw and unfiltered moments of motherhood. Out of thousands of entries, we carefully selected the top 100, and then handpicked the top 10. This article is part of a series that delves into the stories behind the 10 winning photos of the Smart Parenting Motherhood 100 photo contest.
Most expecting mothers received compliments while being pregnant, “You are glowing!”, “What a blessing!”, “There’s a life growing inside of you!”
And while all those are 100% true, it is also 100% true that being pregnant is tiring.
Geomar Triño captured a raw photo of her pregnant wife while taking a shower, portraying the perfect definition of “A Mother’s Silent Cry.”
He said, “In this photo, we see my 6th month pregnant wife taking a shower. As the water massages her tired body, the anxieties of the future weigh upon her mind. She finds comfort by gripping the metal of the shower. It serves as both a physical and emotional anchor, offering support as she faces the upcoming challenges of motherhood. The gentle rhythm of the flowing water creates a calming atmosphere, helping her let go of her worries and anxieties.”
Pregnancy is beautiful and tiring
Pregnancy is a miracle and a beautiful thing, but again, it is tiring.
First, it is very, very physically tiring, especially in the last months, when standing up takes a lot of effort, lying down for a long time is painful, and when you can’t reach down and touch your toes. Not to mention the feeling of always being hungry, always tired, always sleepy. It’s a different kind of tired.
Second, it is also emotionally and mentally tiring. In my first weeks of being pregnant, I almost became paranoid inside the bathroom, always afraid if I’m gonna slip and fall. The thought of taking care of a baby inside your womb, while not being able to see and hold them, is a different kind of mental toll.

And Geomar Triño’s photo of his wife is the exact portrayal of what pregnant women go through - blessed, tired, worried, happy - all at the same time.
Geomar shared with Smart Parenting why he captured the photo, “I wanted to capture her vulnerability and inner turmoil as she stands in the shower, lost in thought and filled with anxiety about the future. By freezing this fleeting moment in time, I sought to immortalize her emotions and create a lasting reminder of the strength and resilience she possesses as she prepares to become a mother of three.”
Pregnancy is bravery
Like a plot twist in a movie, the photo has a strong story behind it. Geomar shared, “In 2019, we tragically lost our one-year-old daughter due to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).”
He continued, “However, despite the heartache, we persevered and continued our journey as parents. In 2021, Joy, my wife, gave birth to our third child while being COVID positive, requiring her to deliver in an isolation room. Now, with our fourth child on the way, Joy will once again embark on the remarkable experience of having her third VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean).”

Despite what happened to them in 2019 and all the challenges pregnancy may bring, Geomar’s wife still chooses to face it head on - all because of the growing life inside her.
Pregnancy may be tiring and consuming, but as it brings life, it will always be beautiful and worth it.
Geomar Triño used a full frame DSLR, Nikon D610. He edited the colored version to black and white in Adobe Lightroom.
