In case you haven’t noticed, today’s new breed of young mommas are redefining what “a mom should look like”. Or better yet, moms are pushing back against the stereotypical limitations of how a mom should look and what a mom should do. Like this mom, who says motherhood isn’t a hindrance to pursuing her career, or this mom who says motherhood doesn’t have to define her style.
We can’t stress just how much we love the messages these celeb moms are reminding us. It’s not just in swimsuits and steamy selfies where moms don’t have to give into mom-shaming AKA “Dapat hindi ka na ganiyan manamit kasi nanay ka na”, it’s also in accessorizing.
A number of celebrity and influencer moms are sharing their ear-piercing stories and journeys on Instagram. It’s proof that this look isn’t just for the child-free or the single gal.
A 2021 article on Wall Street Journal entitled “Do Multiple Piercings Spell Mid-Life Crisis” by Michelle Ruiz noted that there’s a rise in interest among older millennials and Gen X. “Some are awakening long-dormant wild streaks. Others are cathartically puncturing their pandemic-induced weariness, writes Ruiz.
Ear piercings say “Wait, I’m not just a mom. I’m still young and I’m still cool.”
The article quotes lawyer and mother of two, Gillian Rice Maupin from Virgina that multiple ear piercings say, “Wait, I’m not just a mom. I’m still young and I’m still cool.”
Perhaps the resurgence in this trend is in the fearlessness that moms are now finding in themselves. After pregnancy and childbirth plus the sleepless nights of caring for a newborn, could an ear piercing really be scarier?
As Aya Kanai, head of content and creator partnerships in Pinterest who was 43 years old during the WSJ story interview put it: “‘I did IVF three times,’ Ms. Kanai quipped. ‘I could put a needle in my eyeball if you told me I had to.’”
Ear-piercing ideas
Here are some ear piercing ideas from local celeb moms:
Iya Villania Arellano
The mom of four had her ears pierced together with her sister and niece and it turns out, the first time she had her own ears pierced was at 18 years old. In her video, she shows herself getting a lobe and helix piercing—without flinching at the latter! Right now we see Iya going for multiple dainty pieces to style her ear party, sometimes using a pair of thin hoops as her main earring.
Sarah Lahbati Gutierrez
Mom of two always sports a solid ear party, decorating her multiple lobe piercings and mid-helix piercing with no less than diamonds. A well-edited ear party that you don’t have to change daily is a quick and easy way to always look put together while you juggle your responsibilities of work, family, and home management.
Maggie Wilson
Solo parent Maggie Wilson also sports an asymmetrical look, with one side featuring three lobe piercings, a helix, and a rook. She also gets playful with her earring choices, sometimes partnering larger diamonds with medium sized ones or stacking up chunky pieces with her diamonds.
Kylie Padilla
Was there really going to be a universe in which Kylie Padilla would not be a cool mom? Yeah, we didn’t think so either. The mom of two often wears various hoops with her smaller pieces for her multiple piercings, sometimes choosing earrings that showcase metals and fun shapes (like a little crescent moon!) more than gemstones.
Nicole Hernandez Delos Angeles
Her hashtag said it best: earring game strong! Mom of two Nicole flaunts her tragus and flat piercing together with three lobe piercings in a recent Instagram selfie. But it’s her earring stack of dainty diamond pieces that’s making us salivate over her ear party.
Ear piercings to celebrate milestones
Ear piercings can also be a fun way to celebrate memorable moments in your life, just like how Kathryn Bernardo does. That's what Mom of two MC Viray does, who now has six ear piercings. She celebrates her personal milestones both with her family and friends and by getting a new piercing.
Every time I see my ear piercings, I remember ang dami ko na palang napag-daanan. -MC Viray, mom of two
“I believe it will really leave a special mark in me if I celebrate [my milestone] through a piercing. Kasi every time I see my piercings, it's a representation of ‘Ang dami ko na palang napagdaanan’ she says.
MC, who is a materials management analyst first pierced her ears in 2004, when she turned 18 years old.
Her next piercings marked the birth of both children, graduating from university, her promotion, and getting married.
Her next piercing? No specific date or milestone just yet, but she hopes it’ll mark the achievement of a financial milestone.
