How being a supportive partner helps your relationship
According to Very Well Mind, if your spouse knows that you care for them and will be there for them through big things and small, they are much more likely to care for you too.
However, this should start if you can meet your emotional needs yourself.
Sabrina Romanoff, PsyD, a clinical psychologist, suggests a way for you to identify your emotional needs through four steps, using a mnemonic, S.T.O.P.
1. Stop.
Instead of reacting immediately to any triggers, she advises that you pause for a moment when you feel like your emotional needs are not being met. This keeps you from doing anything that would just worsen the situation.
2. Take a step back.
Whether you want to distance yourself from the situation or just take a few breaths, Romanoff suggests giving yourself time to calm down and process your feelings.
3. Observe.
At the moment that you are pausing or distancing, it's a good time to assess the situation and understand what's causing you to feel triggered. "Gather the relevant facts to understand what is going on and what you need," she explained.
4. Proceed mindfully.
Keep these questions in mind: "What do I need from this situation? What is my goal? What decision or behavior would make this situation better or worse?" From here, your next move will be crucial.
These steps are important in identifying your triggers so that next time, you don't have to be dependent on your spouse or anyone. Once you do, you can also communicate it with your spouse so that they will understand you as well.
"Oftentimes what we need the most is to have a partner who is willing to be more accessible, emotionally receptive, and engaged," said Romanoff.
