Plantation Bay Resort & Spa announced Manny Gonzalez is stepping down from his post as "resident shareholder."
Gonzalez angered many Filipinos, especially parents, after his insensitive and offensive response to a resort guest's review on a travel website. The guest, a mom whose child has autism, drew attention to the resort policies about loud noise. You can read it here.
Gonzalez addressed the resort's management and staff in the statement announcing his resignation.
"To protect our staff from further indignities, and with sincere apologies for my error of judgment which led to so much trouble to many innocent people I have decided to resign from the position of Resident Shareholder."
Plantation Bay said it will evaluate its protocols and "has pledged to initiate more proactive efforts and implement necessary changes within the week."
Gonzalez eventually apologized. But the incident drew the attention of the Department of Tourism. The agency said it will investigate the resort for discrimination against persons with disabilities.
