Spending time with the grandparents is one of the best gifts for your little one. In fact, a 2014 study showed that adults who had strong, emotional ties with their grandparents as kids were less likely to be depressed as they grow older.
Brand new grandparents Vilma Santos and Gary Valenciano sure want to spend time with their respective apos as the little ones grow up into responsible adults.
'Momsie' Vilma
The iconic actress known as the Star for All Seasons became a first-time grandmother when her panganay Luis Manzano's wife Jessy Mendiola gave birth on December 28, 2022. Luis and Jessy have named their daughter Isabella Rose, nicknamed Rosie and Peanut.
Vilma, as seen in Jessy's vlog, was filled with joy when she saw Baby Peanut for the first time. But the mom of two boys (aside from Luis, 41, there's Ryan Christian Recto, 26) had a bit of trepidation while asking Jessy if she could carry the newborn.
"Natatakot ako sa kanya," said Vilma while receiving Baby Peanut. She then starting cooing as the newborn quietly snuggled in her arms for some tender lola-apo moment. She prefers to be called Momsie, though.
Quick-witted Luis, a TV host known for his humor, cut in to tease his mom: "Parang first time humawak ng bata 'to. Feeling ko, nabagsak ako no'ng bata ako kaya ako naging ganito."
Vilma didn't mind Luis's teasing as she's busy doting on Baby Peanut, who is, she said, "napaka-cute." She put her hand above the baby's eyebrows to discourage Baby Peanut from looking up and turning "naduduling." She also told her apo, "Momsie is here."
'Pappie' Gary
The singer-songwriter popularly called Mr. Pure Energy became a grandfather for the second time when his panganay Paolo Valenciano's wife Samantha Godinez gave birth on February 7, 2023 (read here). Paolo and Samantha have named their second child Luciano Mikael, nicknamed Luch.
Gary took to Instagram to share his first meeting with his new apo. He captioned his post this way: “'Well hello there!' His name is really Luch which is short for Luciano. But I think I’ll call him Luc as in Luke. Your sister Leia awaits at home."
The name reference comes from the Star Wars movie franchise, in which Luke Skywalker (originally played by Mark Hamill) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) are fraternal twins separated at birth and reunited during the course of the story.
Gary went on telling Baby Luch, "I can’t wait to carry you and tell you many stories about the greatest force in the universe…the love of God!!! I know this force will be strong in you."
He added, using his pet name as a lolo, "Pappie is here for you just like I’m here for your sister Leia. I thank the Lord for you. I love you Luc. I am your grandfather!”
