On Maundy Thursday, the country mourned the loss of an icon. Nora Aunor, one of the greatest stars in Philippine entertainment history, passed away on April 16 at the age of 71. She succumbed to acute respiratory failure.
Nora's passing is a heartbreaking moment for generations of Filipinos who grew up with her voice and films. But for her friends and family, especially her five children, four of whom she adopted and raised as her own, the pain is even deeper.

Nora Aunor's Adopted Children
Nora had five children with her former husband, actor Christopher de Leon, and only Ian was their biological child. She adopted Lotlot, Matet, Kenneth, and Kiko, and they speak of her with love and gratitude, as she always made them feel just as much her own.
Nora once explained in an interview with Jessica Soho why she chose to adopt children.
The late Superstar revealed then, "Dinadala po sila sa bahay.
That sense of responsibility and compassion stayed with her throughout her life. For Nora, motherhood wasn't defined by blood, but by love and the willingness to be there for kids who needed it most.
When Nora's Children Learned the Truth About Their Adoption
In a special feature aired on "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho" on April 20, Nora's grieving children shared a glimpse of the kind of mother she truly was. Their recollections of her were positive, remembering her as a woman who gave her all—not just to her craft, but even more to the children she chose to love.
Matet shared that she learned she was adopted at the age of twelve, when one of the household helpers told her.
She recalled the moment, saying, "'Matet,' pinatawag ako, 'Si Kuya [Ian], anak ni Mommy, pero tayo [Lotlot, Kiko, Kenneth] ay anak niya sa heart."
Even as a child, she understood what that meant, yet she was only thankful.
Never po niyang ipinaramdam sa amin iyan," she added.
Another of Nora's children, Lotlot, also reflected on the moment she questioned why Ian was the only one born to Nora.
Nora's answer stayed with her forever.
Despite that revelation, there was never a moment Lotlot felt less loved.
"Mommy never treated us any differently from Ian," she said.
Kenneth shared the same experience. He said he never felt bitterness about being adopted. Instead, all he felt was gratitude. We're blessed because of mom."
Meanwhile, Kiko became emotional as he spoke about Nora, describing her as the mother he was always meant to haveto have.
Even Ian, Nora's only biological child, never challenged his mother's decision to adopt. His only real curiosity as a child was why they had different parents.
The actor later realized how fortunate he was to have more family members. He added, "Pero hindi, sobrang thankful ako kay God na naging part ako ng mga buhay nila through our mom."
