Add South Korea and Italy to the growing list of countries infected with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
On Sunday, South Korean president Moon Jae-in placed the country under the highest possible alert with regard to its efforts to contain the coronavirus, the New York Times reports.
To date, South Korea has the highest number of cases outside of China, with 763 cases and 6 deaths confirmed so far. With the alert status in effect, the government has the authority to lock down cities and take steps as it deems necessary.
The latest casualty of the coronavirus in South Korea is a 59-year-old man from Daegu where more than half of those infected come from. The city has been placed under a state of emergency.
In an advisory dated February 23, 2020, the Philippines' Department of Foreign Affairs advised travelers to postpone "non-essential" trips to South Korea. No travel ban, however, is imposed. (This, just as South Korea has promised a shorter visa processing period for Pinoys.)
In Italy, the number of coronavirus cases was at 152 on Sunday, with 3 deaths. This has prompted the government to lock down 10 towns in the northern Lombardy region which has about 50,000 residents.
