Pasig in a nutshell
Pasig City has deep historical roots reaching back to the Spanish colonial era. Established in 1572 by Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, Pasig began as a modest agricultural and trading community along the Pasig River. It played a pivotal role in the Philippine Revolution, witnessing key battles in 1896 and 1898 that contributed significantly to the nation's eventual independence.
According to Pasig City library website, various legendary tales and theories attempt to explain the origin of the name "Pasig." The most widely accepted theory, however, was proposed by Dr. Jose Villa Panganiban, a distinguished linguist and former director of the Institute of National Language. According to him, "Pasig" originates from an ancient Sanskrit term meaning "a river flowing from one body of water to another," aptly describing the Pasig River’s connection between Laguna de Bay and Manila Bay.
Pasig is among the oldest towns in the Philippines, established by the Augustinians in 1572. In June 1901, through Act No. 137 of the Philippine Commission, Pasig was incorporated into the newly formed Province of Rizal and served as its capital until 1975, when the Metro Manila Commission was established under Presidential Decree No. 824.
On July 26, 1994, Republic Act 7829 was passed by the Senate and House of Representatives, converting Pasig into a highly urbanized city. This act was signed into law by President Fidel V. Ramos on December 8, 1994, and officially approved by Pasig's residents through a plebiscite held on January 21, 1995.
Today, Pasig has transformed into a bustling, highly urbanized city, with landmarks such as Ortigas Center, a major business district in the Philippines. The city is also rich in cultural heritage, with sites like the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, which was founded in 1572, an icon not only of Christian faith but also of history and tradition. The church is one of the oldest structure in the city. It is also home to Pasig City Museum and vibrant celebrations like the annual Paskotitap festival, which reflects its lively, holiday spirit.

City governance
Pasig is also known for its esteemed mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto, fondly called Mayor Vico by his fans and supporters.
According to WHO, "In 2023, the City of Pasig joined the Initiative under its mayor's leadership, quickly working to align the City Government Plan with constituents' health and well-being needs by strengthening participative decision-making. The mayor established a special Committee with representatives from various city sectors to manage the Initiative, foster intersectoral partnerships, address cross-cutting health issues, and coordinate with other city committees."
Pasig is dedicated to sustainability, actively promoting eco-friendly practices through initiatives such as tree planting and waste reduction programs.
