Last month, Jake Ejercito went to Siargao for the first time. Not only was he able to experience “island life” with daughter Ellie, the actor also met her family during his stay there.

“Actually what happened was, si Ellie was in Siargao, with her mom, with Andi. And then wala naman, hindi naman siya vacation trip. Actually more on daddy duty siya kasi I went there just to pick her up,” Jake shared in an interview with Cinema News.

The dad explained that it was Andi Eigenmann who asked if he could fly out with Ellie from Siargao since their daughter would be staying with him for a while in Manila.

“Kasi nga considering si Andi may bagong baby, she has Lilo also. Mahihirapan siya kung siya pa ang magdadala dito kay Ellie. So nakiusap sa akin si Andi, kung puwede ko sunduin si Ellie and that’s what I did,” Jake said.

He stayed in Siargao for four days and three nights and he was also able to meet the newest addition to the 'Happy Islanders' household as well as Andi's fiancé, Philmar Alipayo.

“Si Lilo na-meet ko na dito sa Manila, and then the youngest, si Koa, I met there in Siargao and also Philmar. It was also [the] first time na I met hime when I was there,” he explains.

    All-grown-up Ellie

Since it was his first visit to Siargao, Jake asked his daughter to take him around the island. He documented it in an Instagram post where he wrote, “found me an angel for a tour guide.”

“I asked her to show me kung saan siya nagpupunta every day, kung saan siya naglalaro, kung saan siya kumakain. So ‘yun ang mga inikot namin while I was there,” the dad said.

In a previous interview, Jake admitted that he dreads Ellie approaching her teenage years. He tells Cinema News that Ellie now refuses to be called “Princess.

“Sa totoo lang she hates it, parang recently ayaw na niya na tinatawag siyang ‘Princess.’ Recently siguro she’s turning ten so medyo nagma-mature na, she’s not a baby. She’s not quite a teenager, pero alam mo iyong nandun na siya sa stage na ‘iyon na ayaw na niyang binebaby-baby siya,” he shares.

Once in a while, though, his daughter surprises him with affection. “Si Ellie isn't that expressive, pero once in a while, out of nowhere, mag-'I love you, Dad,' mag 'Thank you, Dad.' …More than enough na ‘yun for me when I hear those words from her,” Jake says.

    On co-parenting with Andi

Jake has always been vocal about the challenges that he and Andi went through to make co-parenting work. He says it wasn’t always smooth sailing, but now he sees that that Ellie is happier because he has a better relationship with her mom.

He could feel Ellie was affected by their issues before. “I really don’t ask Ellie about it, parang na-o-observe ko lang sa kanya kasi siyempre Andi and I, ‘yung relationship naman namin when it comes to co-parenting, hindi naman naging smooth lagi and hindi naman siya naging smooth ever since,” he says.

“Marami kaming pinagdaanan na phases. Siyempre before, immature pa kami and everything. So medyo malayo din ang nilakbay bago naging ganito ka-settle and smooth.

“And I don't ask Ellie about it pero nakikita ko lang sa kanya dati, may times na kapag magulo, siyempre nakikita ko kay Ellie na nahihirapan din siya,” he adds.

What really pushed Jake and Andi to fix their relationship was Ellie. For their daughter’s sake, they were able to put their differences aside.

"What’s good about now is ang priority namin is what's good for Ellie. ‘Yun ang motivation namin, si Ellie. Nakikita ko sa kanya na hindi na siya nahihirapan, smooth lahat, okay ang communication," Jake shares.

The dad doesn’t want to get all the credit for raising a good kid. In a post that he shared in March 2021, Jake thanked his parents, siblings, relatives, friends, and even their kasambahays for guiding him to become a better parent for his daughter.

He also called Andi a “great co-parent,” saying “They da real MVPs!”

At the end of the day, Jake says that what he’s doing isn’t anything special. He’s just “trying to be the best dad for my daughter.”

"Especially in my case, considering na hindi ko siya laging kasama, so every time na I'm with her, I make it a point na sulutin ‘yung opportunities. I make the most out of it,” he says.
