  • Celebrities — they’re just like us, even when it comes to motherhood. Many of us may assume that celebs’ lives are all rainbows and sunshine, but the truth is many of them also go through the same struggles that every other mom does. It just so happens there is a spotlight on them.

Celeb moms LJ Reyes, Kyla, and Empress Schuck shared their personal stories of motherhood during Lactum 3 Plus’ Mother’s Day event. Though they may be commonly assumed to have picture-perfect lives, they are not immune to all kinds of difficult circumstances in life.

LJ, who became a first-time mom in her early 20s, opened up about what it was like for her when she found out she was pregnant with her first child, Aki.

“It came as a surprise blessing,” LJ, mom to Aki and Summer, shared. “I was 22 at the time. Mayroon ding fear, kasi siyempre, it was a surprise, I didn’t know what to do, it was unexpected.”

LJ said she was she was scared intially, but being aware of her little one growing inside of her took away the fear. “You know, when I saw my kid, when I started feeling him kick in my tummy, move in my tummy, iba ‘yong pakiramdam. Sobrang saya.”

Empress, who gave birth to daughter Athalia at 23 , had a similar experience with LJ. “Mine was kinda different because it wasn’t planned. I was also young, I was at the peak of my career, and I didn’t know what to do, kasi strict din ‘yong parents ko.”

She shared comments she heard from other people who found out she was pregnant during that time. “Siyempre, ‘pag gano’n, sasabihin ng mga tao sa ‘yo, ‘Naku, sayang ‘yong career mo, ang bata mo pa. ‘Wag mo ituloy ‘yan.’”

Empress, who is still in a relationship with Athalia’s father’s, Vino Guingona, said, “I knew I had to do it, and that was the right decision. Ngayon, 3 years old na si Athalia, and I just know that I made the right and the best decision ever.”

The three celeb moms were also asked about how they cope with the challenges motherhood brings every day.

For Empress, a strong and steady support system was key. She shared that at first, she had misunderstandings with her mom, but the arrival of her daughter became a way for those rifts to become water under the bridge.

“Siyempre, at first, bata ako and strict ‘yong parents ko, [so] may konting hindi-pagkakaintindihan,” said Empress, then later elaborated, “But then, ‘pag lumalaki na rin ‘yong baby mo — totoo ‘yon eh, na kahit anong iringan niyo ng mother mo, once na mabibigyan mo siya ng baby, ng apo, parang mawawala lahat eh, magiging mabait siya.”

“When Athalia happened, everything changed,” Empress also shared. “Nagkaroon lang bigla [ng relationship]. Ang laki ng nagagawa ng isang baby.”

LJ talked about the difficulty of juggling work and caring for her child as a single mother.

“Medyo mahirap i-balance ‘yong work, kasi kailangan mo mag-work, kasi single mom ka. Tapos kailangan mo rin mag-alaga, kasi ikaw ‘yong nanay eh. Ikaw ‘yong provider, ikaw rin ‘yong nurturer.

“It was a difficult challenge for me, pero naging napaka-importante ng support system ko, which was my family, until now na mayroon na akong second baby…Ibang klase pa rin talaga ‘yong support system. I have a big family, and I’m very blessed to have a big and medyo complicated family, pero super, super supportive, and it really counts.”

Kyla, who is mom to Toby Elsiah, said she was also fortunate to have a stable support system in her husband, her parents, and her in-laws. But one of her biggest hurdles was breastfeeding.

“Sinasabi ko parati sa mommy ko, ‘I wish you told me na sobrang hirap pala mag-breastfeed,’” she said. “Sobra talaga. As in, mayroon akong trauma na every time iiyak ‘yong anak ko, nag-aalala ako…hindi ko alam kung tatayo ako o uupo ako. And then, [kapag] dedede na siya, hindi pa siya dumedede, naiiyak na ‘ko, kasi sobrang sakit niya.”

Another struggle Kyla went through was sleep — or rather, the lack thereof.

“Sobrang saya ko na na makakatulog ako nang 30 minutes straight. At least ‘yong first three months, mahirap, ‘di ba, [kasi] wala kang tulog.”

We can hear the moms already: “Relatable!”
