As parents, you naturally want to be involved and in the know when it comes to your children's lives. You want to know their friends, hobbies, passions, and wait..."deins"? Is that even a word?
If you find yourself lost and desperate for Google to translate every time you speak with your child, well, you're not alone. Many parents have the same sentiment. It turns out that keeping up with the latest teen jargon is increasingly becoming a challenge, especially now in the age of social media.
Gen Z, or the generation of teens born between 1997 and 2012, is taking over the internet with their slang terms. Just like every generation before them that developed a language of their own, if you think about it.
For many teens, using slang terms is an outlet for their self-expression. "For the most part, teens use slang as a way to create their own identity, fit into specific social groups and express independence," according to a USAToday article.
In line with this language-related generation gap between parents and teens, Summit Media's influencer marketing agency, Clout+, ran a little test for its first video output. It pitted moms against millennials in defining some terms supposedly coined by Gen Zs.
'Deins,' 'simp,' and 'sus' are some of the terms they tried to decode. Can you guess what these words mean?
