On pregnancy loss and stillbirth
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a baby who dies after 28 weeks of pregnancy but before or during birth is classified as a stillbirth. Stillbirths are relatively rare, occurring in about 1 out of every 160 pregnancies.
The primary causes of stillbirth include pregnancy and childbirth complications, prolonged pregnancy, maternal infections (such as malaria, syphilis, and HIV), maternal health conditions (like hypertension and diabetes), and fetal growth restriction. Nevertheless, experts cannot identify a specific cause of death for most babies who are stillborn.
It’s important to remember that pregnancy loss is not anyone's fault. Most people can go on to have a healthy pregnancy after experiencing a miscarriage or stillbirth.
Parents who have suffered a loss need medical care, support from loved ones, and time to heal.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to you, Charee, Martell, and Cesco.
