Kathleen Hermosa On Her Second Pregnancy Loss: ‘We Will Never Give Up Trying’

After announcing her second pregnancy, former actress Kathleen Hermosa continued to share her intimate pregnancy journey through her vlog. In the next three episodes of the vlog miniseries entitled, Quattro, Kathleen and her husband, Miko Santos, navigated the highs of hearing their baby’s heartbeat and the devastating lows of the medical complications in their most recent pregnancy.

Hearing the baby’s heartbeat

In the second episode, an elated Kathleen captured the moment they heard the baby’s heartbeat and confirmed that the pregnancy is progressing. “It’s a beautiful, happy day for us. Finally, there’s a heartbeat!” Kathleen exclaimed.

Miko expressed the couple’s gratitude, saying, “Thank you for everything, Lord. Thank you for answering our prayers.”

The couple’s joy is evident throughout the vlog as Kathleen prepares for the pregnancy and as they share the good news with their family.

Congenital thrombophilia

However, the third episode takes a somber turn as the couple goes in for a checkup with their OB, where they learn of Kathleen’s diagnosis with congenital thrombophilia.

In a call with her sister, Kristine Hermosa-Sotto, Kathleen revealed, “Wala. Tumigil yung heartbeat. May heartbeat na nung una, lumaki din yung baby… May limbs na so nag-form… Pero tumigil yung, nawala yung heartbeat. Ang ibig sabihin nung congenital thrombophilia, humihinto ang supply ng dugo ng mommy papunta sa fetus, sa baby.”

Thrombophilia is a blood clotting disorder; individuals who have it have an increased risk of blood clot formation in vessels. Congenital thrombophilia refers to individuals who have inborn or inherited the disorder.

In women, congenital thrombophilia increases the risk of pregnancy complications–the most common of which include miscarriage in the first or second semester, placental abruption, and incomplete fetal development. Experts believe that these complications are caused due to thrombus formation in the placenta, which then leads to changes in the placenta and a reduced blood flow to the fetus.

The rest of the vlog shows how Kathleen and Miko coped with the devastating news, with Miko at one point saying, “Matulala na lang bigla.”

Kathleen was steadfast in her faith, professing, “What’s happening, Lord? If there is something that we keep repeating that disappoints you, or you’re showing us something, Lord, please make us see it.”

“I’m actually contracting right now,” Kathleen then shared. “Not because I’m gonna give birth, pero because the baby needs to come out of my body. Pero parang feeling ko mas masakit ito kaysa nung nag-triplets kami.

“I’m thinking, would I want to do it again with this much pain? I’m praying next time, [next] contractions [ko], baby na talaga na totoo yung lumabas. Like I know it’s already a healthy baby,” Kathleen emphasized.

Kathleen’s prayer

The last part of the series saw Kathleen and her family, including her sister, Kristine and niece, Dre, visit Camotes Island. Amidst the backdrop of the beautiful heart-shaped island, Kathleen shared more insights on her most recent pregnancy loss, “I realized that I wanted a child and family of my own. I obeyed God and keep obeying God up until now in every area of my life. But right now, when things happen like this, you would really get confused and you don’t know where to go, what to do next.

“In such pain like this, [I have] this deep great desire in my heart to be a mother to my own child,” Kathleen further emphasized.

Kathleen ends the video series documenting her second pregnancy with a prayer:

“Mother God, help me to trust your goodness especially during hard times. Please help me to receive your grace and to always see your hand working for my good in every situation.

“Be with us in our agony of waiting. Lord, there is no one who understands the longing of my heart like you. Help us to trust you more.”
