  • Last November 17, 2021, Meryll Soriano and Joem Bascon's son Gido turned 11 months old. But Joem was apparently at work, based on Meryll's Instagram post, that's why the first-time dad sent his greetings virtually.

Just a day before, Meryll reminisced the time she got pregnant with Gido, 14 years after she had her first child Eli, in an exclusive online interview with SmartParenting.com.ph.

"We were really waiting, kumbaga we were planning," says Meryll, referring to the time when she and Joem got back together to pick up from where they left off 11 years prior. This time around they were set on taking their relationship to another level as parents to their first child.

"So, actually, wala akong ginawa kundi mag-test," she adds. "Ang dami kong pregnancy test kasi abang na abang. Mali din naman 'yun kasi minsan na-a-upset ka na hindi pa din. But, abang na abang talaga kami. We were really ready."

    Pregnant in a pandemic

Meryll remembers religiously taking the home pregnancy test even while on vacation in Japan with Joem in early March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic was just starting. Luckily, they got home just before the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) was first imposed on March 16 that year.

The Dear Mama Meme vlogger goes on narrating the time she finally got a positive result: "I think, I was very speechless. Hindi ko nga alam, parang I was so lost kung kanino ko sasabihin. Parang gusto kong sabihin sa lahat. Pero sino ang uunahin ko?

"Si Joem yata, di ba? Siya yata 'yung tamang unang sinabihan ko. So sinabi ko sa kanya. We were happy. And when I told Eli, he cried kasi he's been secretly dreaming of having a brother. Buti na lang brother. 'Tapos 'yun, he cried. I was very filled with joy na you know, everybody's happy na buntis ako."

There was a slight hitch, though: "Para siyang faint line pa, so punta pa ako sa kapatid kong doctor, 'Ano ba 'to? Ano ba? Sa tingin mo positive ba 'to?' 'Tapos pinicture-an ko pa, sinend ko sa doctor kong kaibigan na best friend ko. Sabi ko, 'Kailangan kong malaman! Kailangan kong malaman kung totoo ba.'

"So, pinag-test ako ulit ng kapatid ko the morning after kasi nga mas mataas 'yung-- ano bang tawag dun? 'Yung hormones mo sa umaga kasi gabi ako nag-test, kasi nga test ako nang test. So, gabi ako nag-test pero faint lang. So, the next day, ayun na, malinaw na, na pregnant nga ako."

Meryll says being pregnant in a pandemic was "ang hirap." For starters, she was, just like the rest of the population, had to be confined at home. She only went out for her monthly checkup with her ob-gyn. But, she points out, "'Yung pandemic, it really created this very safe space for me and for the family."

Then there's the 14-year gap from her first pregnancy, so Meryll felt everything was new again. She says in reflection, "The only difference is I have to take care of my pregnancy because of my age...Nagkaroon ako ng gestational diabetes because, I guess, of my age. I gave birth, 38 ako."

Meryll shares the measures she had to take to overcome her gestational diabetes: "Puro workout. As in kailangan ko talagang ayusin yung pagkain ko. And at the same time, talagang wala akong magagawa kasi nag-try akong mag-cut ng sugar, nag-try akong nang lahat 'yan, pero ang taas pa rin ng sugar ko so I had to take insulin."

Going through that difficult part of Meryll's pregnancy is now just a memory, as she and Joem dote on Baby Gido. She exclaims, "Everybody's happy, lagi siyang nakangiti. Aside from s'yempre, of course, meron siyang mga buryo moments na ano, meron na siyang temper ngayon.

"Nafi-figure out na niya kung ano 'yung gusto niya, di ba? Pero, masayahin. Lagi siyang naka-smile. So, lahat, baliw na baliw na baliw sa kanya kasi nga ang cute- ang cute talaga! Hindi dahil nanay ako. Aaminin ko kung hindi cute, e. Pero cute talaga."
