Nikki Valdez On Losing Baby Conceived Through IVF: 'Nasa Healing Stage Pa Ako'

  • Nikki Valdez opens up about working on healing and acceptance after losing her 'embaby' last year.

    'Embaby' is the portmanteau of the words' embryo' and 'baby,' and is used to refer to the embryo created as part of an in-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure.

    In an episode of ABS-CBN's "Magandang Buhay," Nikki admits that she is still recovering from the heartbreaking IVF journey she and her husband Luis Garcia went through in 2021.

    The singer-actress turned emotional, looking back at how she and Luis planned and prayed to have a baby. The couple tied the knot in Hong Kong in August 2018.

    "It was last year when we lost our baby. Talagang pinagdasal namin ‘yon, pinag-usapan namin nang mabuti and we felt that we were led to it like in everything—financially, emotionally. Sabi namin, why don't we give it a try," she recounted.

    After the pregnancy loss, the celebrity mom confessed that there were times when she would question their decision to try and conceive via IVF.

    But in moments when she feels doubt, she finds comfort in knowing that they have tried and taken their chances.

    "May times pa rin na I keep thinking to myself na—Sabi ko, 'Dapat ba ginawa namin 'yon? Or 'Dapat ba hindi na lang at in-enjoy na lang namin 'yung kung anong meron kami?'

    "Because as everyone knows, I'm very blessed to have Luis in my life as my partner in raising Olivia, whom he considers his from the very beginning," she shared. Olivia is Nikki's daughter from a previous relationship.

    Healing after pregnancy loss

    It was last December 2021 when Nikki first shared to the public about her IVF journey when she and Luis marked their 7 years of being a couple.

    "I know 7 years is nothing compared to other relationships that last a decade or more, but we celebrate this day because with everything we went through."

    "From alternate visits to the hospital to trying to have a baby and losing our little "embaby"— we are here constantly making that choice to love each other," Nikki said in her Instagram greeting to Mark.

    A couple of months since, the 41-year-old actress says she's still working on walking past the pain of losing a baby.

    "Ngayon nasa journey pa rin ako ng trying to pray for kung ano talaga 'yung path na gusto ni Lord na matahak ko. Let's say ito ang gusto ko pero hindi naman 'yon ang purpose Niya for me, then so be it. Nasa healing stage pa ako."  She adds, "I pray for the total healing of my heart."

    Nikki also says she's keeping her trust in whatever plans the Lord has in store for her family. "At tsaka kung talagang si Olivia lang ang regalo sa amin ni Lord, I will accept it and I will forever and take care and love Olivia, I mean kami ni Luis."

    What to do after miscarriage

    Miscarriage and pregnancy loss remain taboo topics today. But it's important to have an open discussion about it to raise awareness and provide proper support to women and families who have gone through it.

    IVF is an alternative fertility treatment, but it's not a failproof solution to conceive a baby, and miscarriages can still happen.

    Below are must-know care tips after miscarriage:

    1. Take care of yourself

    Rest. Let your body recover from both the physical and emotional trauma of pregnancy loss. 

    2. Monitor your body temperature

    It's vital to monitor your body temperature after miscarriage. Immediately consult a doctor if you experience recurring fever to check for any possible health complications.

    3. Monitor bleeding

    Bleeding can happen after a miscarriage. Some also experience spotting and mild cramps. Suppose you notice that bleeding is unusually heavy, or you have to replace your pad within 1 to 2 hours. In that case, it's best to consult with your doctor.

    4. Remember: It's okay not to be okay

    Let yourself mourn but do not dwell on thoughts of regrets or point the blame on yourself. It would help to join support groups to talk to other people who can relate to your situation.
