  • When Karen Reyes noticed unusual redness in her son's gums, she dismissed it as "singaw" or mouth ulcer. The former Pinoy Big Brother housemate said to herself, "mawawala din." Days later, Karen had to rush her son to the hospital.

In an Instagram post, the mom recounts the health scare her 2-year-old son, Lukas, went through. It began when Lukas got a fever last November 4, 2021, and Karen observed something different in his mouth the next day.

"I noticed ang pamumula ng gums niya. When I checked it, nakakita ako ng mga singaw hanggang sa lalamunan. So, ako na singawin sabi ko 'mawawala din'. So, I gave him paracetamol lang for the fever," Karen wrote.

After 24 hours, Karen decided to have her child checked by a doctor through online consultation. Lukas was prescribed antibiotics but it was hard to give it to him since he was in pain because of the mouth sores.

"Ang hirap niya painumin dahil una, walang laman ang tiyan niya, pangalawa masakit ang bibig niya! So, noong madaling araw iyak na sya nang iyak dahil hindi na nga siya maka-dede. So, nagdecide na ako na ipa-ospital siya," Karen shared.

"November 7, nanghihina na siya. Iba na din ang itsura ng mukha niya, lumalamlam na ang mata niya," Karen added.

Since Lukas could not eat properly and could not take his antibiotics, he had to be admitted to the hospital.
"Yes, na-ospital si Lukas ng dahil sa singaw. Dumagdag pa diyan ang tonsilitis," the actress shared.

    Lesson learned on "singaw"

Karen takes this experience as a lesson, and she wants other parents to treat this as a cautionary tale as well. Her most important reminders to other parents:

"Sabi ng doctor ang cause ng singaw is because mababa ang resistensya (so mga mommies, vitamins is really a must. Tinigil ko kasi ang vitamins niya dahil iniluluwa niya lang), and because of too much sweets tapos konti ang water intake."

Lastly, she tells parents not to shrug off "singaw."

"Sa mga mommies out there, 'wag nating balewalain ang mga singaw kahit isang maliit lang 'yan dahil pwede siya mag-spread sa bibig since it's viral," Karen said.
