Female Rider On Why We Should Be Kind To Delivery Riders: 'Lagi Mong Piliin Ano Ang Tama'

It’s a challenging job, but it can also be very rewarding

What it’s like to be a delivery and motorcycle for hire rider

When the pandemic began and everyone had to stay home to prevent the COVID-19 virus from spreading, delivery and motorcycle for hire riders became frontliners who helped everyone get their daily supplies and bring doctors, nurses, and other workers to their destinations.

Laron started her career as a rider for a well-known motorcycle for hire company. She eventually branched out to parcel deliveries during the lockdown.

“Nakakatanggap ako nung mga ipapa-deliver na mga envelope, mga folder lang. Hanggang sa kung anu-anong delivery napasok ko — flower shop, parcel, doon na ako nag-start,” she recalled.

Not easy for female riders

She admitted that it’s not an easy job, especially for female riders like her. “Kung minsan, hindi talaga maiiwasan na merong negative comment lalo na kapag babae.” There’s also no shortage of people who questioned her ability to ride just because of her gender.

“Wala sa kasarian ‘yan,” Laron would tell them. “Pagdating sa trabaho, pantay-pantay na.” “Dapat handa kang harapin ‘yung mga iba’t-ibang klase ng tao,” she advised.

“Hindi mo maiiwasan na nandiyan ‘yung pagdating mo pa lang mainit na rin ‘yung ulo niya. May iba’t-ibang klase ng tao tayong makakasalimuha.”

The rewards despite the challenges

“May mga good feedback din naman akong naririnig, which is masarap sa puso,” she shared. She would often receive tips for her smooth driving, plus positive reviews for her prompt deliveries.

When it comes to the money she earns, she said it all depends on how diligent you are as a rider. “Kadalasan, swerte na ‘yung above minimum,” she shared. 

She has had all sorts of experiences as a rider, from delivering huge Christmas trees, to cancelled rides and irate passengers.

Always do good

“Para sa akin, lagi mong pipiliin kung ano ang tama,” she emphasized. Laron said it’s important to always choose to do good, be good, and have a lot of patience.

“At masaya ka sa ginagawa mo,” she said. “Kasi kung masaya ka sa ginagawa mo, hindi mo nararamdaman ‘yung pagod. Hindi mo nararamdaman na nagtatrabaho ka.”
