Kryz Uy and Slater Young's son Scott 'Scottie' Knoa catches COVID-19. The vlogger mom took to Youtube to share her 1-year-old son's bout with the virus.

In a Youtube video uploaded on Feb. 9, 2022, Kryz, who's also pregnant with her second child, detailed the COVID-19 symptoms Scottie experienced. She also detailed the tests they had to take and how much it cost.

Scottie's symptoms

At the beginning of the vlog, Kryz recalled when Scottie got up from a nap and suddenly felt fussy. His temperature also shot up to 38.2° C. "It was so weird because he would just cry out of [the] blue, and we didn't know what he wanted."

Kryz was understandably worried since Scottie was his usual active self. "Nakakatakot, nakakalungkot because you know he's such a happy, active kid, and suddenly he's not active at all," she shared. In the video's description, Kryz adds, "It was soooo painful to watch him be so tired and weak."

The toddler also lost his appetite for a whole day. His temperature also went from 38° C to 39° C. For children, normal body temperature is about 36° C. If it reaches 38 degrees Celsius or higher, it's time to consult a doctor. (Read more facts about fever every parent should know here)

During this time, Scottie's COVID infection is still unknown. All of them immediately got a swab test, which turned out negative, but they scheduled for another test for accuracy.

The soon-to-be-mom-of-two also shared how the situation is extra difficult with her baby bump growing. "My back has been hurting so much because he's (Scottie) been wanting me to carry him...Even though my stomach is super huge I have to carry him. He won't allow anyone else."

Testing a kid for COVID-19

Scottie's pediatrician recommended that he undergo a BioFire Test, which Kryz explained is a type of swab test that detects not only COVID-19 but also other viral infections.

Kryz tried to alleviate Scottie's fear prior to the swab by telling him that they were going to a drive-thru to order "tickle nose." Although there was some resistance, there were able to get the test done. And, unfortunately, it turned out positive.

Aside from the swab test, Scottie also underwent a complete blood count (CBC) and dengue antigen test. Kryz admits these tests were not cheap, and they had to shell out around Php15,000. The bulk of which was from the Biofire test, which costs Php10,000, but as a PhilHealth member, Kryz was able to get a Php2,000 discount.

Although Scottie tested positive for COVID-19, they did not need to rush him to the hospital seeing him starting to show his usual active self again. Another temperature check also showed that his temperature had already gone down to 36.4° C.

By the end of the video, when Kryz asked Scottie how he is, the brilliant boy answered, "Okay na." Get well soon, Scottie Boo!

When to rush your kid to the hospital if they have COVID-19 symptoms?

Since January 2022, there have been noticeably more moms reporting their children having COVID-19 symptoms. Some celebrity moms like Iya Villania, Bianca Gonzales, and Rica Peralejo. (Read more here)

With the threat of the virus still present, parents need to know what symptoms to watch out for in children, which calls for a visit to the hospital. The reality is "even small babies get COVID," reminds Dr. Maria Cristina I. Alberto, a pediatric medicine specialist.

In a previous interview with Smart Parenting, Dr. Alberto lists six symptoms, which are signs that a child needs to be brought to the hospital for COVID. (Click here to read more about Dr. Alberto's advice)

  1. Difficulty breathing
  2. Persistent chest pain
  3. Changes in sensorium
  4. Severe dehydration
  5. Low blood pressure
  6. Poor pulse

But even before getting to this point, it goes without saying that prevention is always better than cure. Aside from practicing basic safety protocols such as wearing face masks and frequent washing of hands, following physical distancing, and avoiding crowded places, health experts call parents to get the vaccine against COVID-19.

In the country, the vaccination drive has already been expanded to include kids ages 5 to 11. Celebrities are also leading in encouraging parents to have their children vaccinated. Among celebrity kids who already got the jab are Zia Dantes and Luna Agoncillo. See more celebrity kids who already received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine here.

5-step guide to fight COVID-19

Dr. Pia Hugo, an internal medicine practitioner, previously shared to Smart Parenting five important reminders that we all should continue to observe and practice amid the pandemic:

  • For those who can afford to stay at home, practice voluntary ECQ.
  • If it is really necessary to go out, wear your face masks and shields properly, practice social distancing and hand hygiene.
  • Avoid enclosed spaces as much as possible. Choose take-out or delivery instead of dining in.
  • Avoid physical reunions with friends or relatives. There are many virtual platforms available for you to communicate and be with them.
  • Get vaccinated. Any brand of vaccine will suffice because an ounce of added protection is already significant.
