  • As the year 2021 comes to a close, Smart Parenting looks back at the stories, which resonated the most to our parenting community. In this yearender article, we round up real life stories from parents and families that inspired, shocked, and pinched our hearts in more ways than one.

    Some stories were cautionary tales about the pressing topic for the past couple of years-- health. Some magnified the challenging parts of parenthood. And while 2021 was marred by grief, there are plenty of other inspiring stories that showed how a parent's affection transcends all barriers.

    Top 10 real parenting and health stories of 2021

    From a mom's heartbreaking story of loss, a dad's breastfeeding ordeal, to a son's successful attempt at making his parents proud, here are the SmartParenting.com.ph stories that made us cry and smile this year.

    1. Mom recalls ‘unexplained’ death of 18-month-old toddler

    The most shared piece recounts a mom's tragic experience after finding her son lifeless one morning. "He was just sleeping," she laments. But despite her loss, she hopes others would gain a valuable lesson from her story-- to cherish every moment they have with their child.

    “Motherhood is tiring, yes, but please do not get tired of being a mother. Because no one knows in just a snap, they will be gone. Hug your children a little tighter today. Love them as if there’s no tomorrow,” Angelica de Leon-Panganiban reminds parents.

    2. A dad's breastfeeding dilemma

    A day after giving birth to triplets, a mom passed away leaving the three babies in the care of her husband. Dad Joel Orbello Regal immediately acted to find ways on how to ensure their triplets' health and safety. In true Bayanihan spirit, netizens lent their helping hands to give the babies breast milk supply.

    3. After losing their child to COVID-19, couple reminds parents: ‘COVID-19 is not a joke’

    A cautionary tale on the threat of COVID-19 is among the most shared stories this year. Roxy Sibug and Walter Mayor, a couple based in Dubai, bravely shared how they lost their 1-year-old son to the said infectious disease.

    "Maging lesson sana ito sa lahat ng magulang...wag balewalain ang COVID dahil totoong totoo siya," Roxy wrote in a Facebook post.

    4. Son made his mom and dad proud after getting an $85K scholarship from a prestigious US College

    2021 is not that gloomy after all. This story of inspiration offered a glimmer of hope. Meet, Gelbert Cresenscio a scholar of the Amherst College in the U.S. His father is a farmer and earns extra by driving a rented tricycle at night. While his mother is currently a restaurant waitress.

    Gelbert is proof that with the right amount of determination and perseverance, no goal is too big or impossible to reach.

    5. Mom shares 3 children's battle with COVID-19

    When their children fell ill, a couple thought it's a case of 'stomach flu' until their entire household was struck by COVID-19. Mom Lyka Roxas-Mohammad shared her family's experience so that her fellow parents will be aware of the symptoms they should look out for.
