Can This Hair Tool Help a Hairstyling Rookie Mama Curl Hair Like a Pro?

From clueless to curls! How this mom styled her daughter’s graduation hair with zero experience.

“Mommy, can you curl my hair for graduation?”

My 11-year-old asked me this a few weeks before her grade school graduation. Admittedly, I’ve only styled my hair a handful of times for special occasions, mostly using a flat iron to tame flyaways. I don’t think I’m very good at it either, so I don’t try curls—I usually stick to straight styles.

But what mom can say no to a request like that? So I gave it a shot. Luckily, Tymo allowed me to try their Tymo Curlgo Cordless Hair Curler (P5,800). They also used it at their blowout bar during the Smart Parenting Mother’s Day Fair. So, did it work for us? Did she get her graduation curls?

Tymo Curlgo Review

What is the Tymo Curlgo?

The Tymo Curlgo is a cordless, automatic, one-inch curling iron with a rotating barrel that claims to be anti-scald and tangle-free. The Tymo Curlgo I received is pink and comes packaged in a sleek white box with a matching USB-C charging block and cable.

It has four main controls:

  • Safety Lock: This is located at the back and can be toggled up or down to lock or unlock. It prevents the device from accidental startup, such as when traveling.
  • Power Button: Located near the bottom area in front, cycles through the device’s three heat settings options. The heat setting is in the vertical window above the power button.
  • Curl Direction Toggle: The toggle for the curl direction is located in front, right on top of the handle. It can be toggled right or left.
  • Rotate Button: This button is located at the device handle, with lights on the sides. Pressing it starts the barrel’s rotation, which wraps and curls the hair.

The device offers three heat settings:

  • 320 degrees: Bleached/damaged/fine hair
  • 365 degrees: Fine to normal hair
  • 410 degrees: Thick/coarse hair

Curling with the Tymo Curlgo

Using the Tymo Curlgo is quite simple and easy. If you’re not the type who reads the instruction book, there are several videos to watch on TikTok. Before starting my first curling session with Tymo, a simple search led me to this TikTok of [the] Lindsay Lohan using the same tool. So armed with what I’ve read and watched from TikTok, here’s how I tried it out on my hair:

First, I held the Tymo with buttons facing me and toggled the curl direction button to the correct position. Then, I inserted a section (the brand recommends ¾ inch to 1 inch) of hair into the duckbill-shaped barrel at the top, pulled the hair down, and pressed the rotate button. The barrel will then automatically rotate, rolling my hair inwards around the barrel, for eight seconds. The device fully stopped with a soft beep.

Did It Curl My Hair?

Before touching my daughter’s hair, I tested it on mine first. Over the course of a few days, I tested the Tymo on my color-treated, long, fine, and thin hair. I’ve tried to curl it using other tools but failed due to either user error, my hair not holding a curl, or a combination of both.

I did not use hair protectant or styling products when I used the Curlgo. It took a little bit of maneuvering and getting used to during my first try, with me trying to slip my hair inside (especially the sections at the back) and trying to press the right button. But the process got easier as I figured out how to feed the lock of hair inside and the device’s best position vis-a-vis my head to press the right buttons.

Admittedly, the curl did not hold the first time out, maxing out at four hours. But Tymo tamed and curled my hair in the next few tries. What worked best for me was curling each section twice at the lowest setting—pressing the curl button again once it finished and slowly releasing it. Even without products, my hair stayed curled throughout the day. The Curlgo produced beautiful curled ringlets or spirals of hair, which I brushed out to a relaxed beach wave look.

Did It Curl My Daughter’s Hair?

Now the real test: my daughter’s hair. We did a practice session a few days before the big day so that I could gauge how much time we would need and what products we would have to use.

For context, my daughter has non-treated, long, straight, thick hair. They must wear it for graduation in a neat ponytail or bun. For our test run, I applied heat protectant and decided to section her hair properly, starting with the bottom, middle, and top—curling in sections as we went along. Set in the lowest setting and facing the device towards her, I pressed the button and fed the hair section inside the duckbill barrel mouth. The result was bouncy soft curls that stayed for around 2 hours.

I applied styling mousse for the event day and tied her hair into a neat ponytail. I curled the ponytail sections and finished each one with Revlon Style Masters Medium Hold Hairspray, as recommended by the brand. Her curls held up beautifully all day.

What I Liked About the Tymo Curlgo

As a somewhat newbie hairstyling mama, here are a few things I like about the Tymo Curlgo:

  • It has the option to go cordless. I love the portability function of the Tymo Curlgo as for first-timers like me, nakakagulo pa ang cords and it can affect how you hold or position the tool. So using the Tymo without the cord made it easier for me to curl my and my daughter’s hair. The battery longevity is not bad either, lasting long enough for three full curling sessions. I can see myself using it on the go in the car, or even while traveling.
  • It has a safety feature for curling, and there’s no chance of it pulling out your hair. Seeing your hair go inside the curling barrel can cause anxiety, but I discovered that Tymo Curlgo had a safety feature when my hair got tangled up inside. The barrel automatically stopped, turned the other way for a bit, and entirely stopped, allowing me to fully release my hair painlessly. This is a good feature to have, especially if you’re also considering using it for your tween.
  • It’s super easy and safe to use. Once you’ve familiarized yourself with the buttons, styling is fast and simple. The device heats up in under a minute. The barrel stays hot, but the outer body remains safe to touch. It’s quiet, efficient, and ideal for rushed mornings—I curled my daughter’s hair in under an hour without waking her little sister up.

The Tymo Curlgo is a beginner-friendly, safe, and effective tool for moms and tweens alike. This curler makes hairstyling easy even if you’re not confident. I plan to leave it with my tween to use in time for her next big event.
