We've been on community quarantine for almost a year now. For many families, children's visit to the doctor or dentist can no longer be postponed. Some may also need to travel locally or internationally for various valid reasons.

The Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases omnibus guidelines allow kids ages 14 and below to be outside of their residences "when indispensable under the circumstances for obtaining essential goods and services." Young children can go out under these situations provided they go together with their parents.

PPE for better protection

If there is a need to go out, one way parents can keep their peace of mind while their children are out in public spaces is to let them wear personal protective equipment (PPE). It is an extra layer of waterproof clothing that can catch viruses from surfaces or other people that would otherwise stick to your child's normal clothes.

Where to buy children's PPE

On our parenting community, Smart Parenting Village, a mom wondered whether there are online stores that sell or customize PPE. We've gathered a list of shops where you can buy one without leaving the comfort and safety of your home.

Does wearing PPE in public places like medical clinics, airports or airplanes protect your child from COVID-19?There are no studies to prove that. However, wearing a PPE can help you easily shed and separate clothes that came in contact with potential contaminants, for example, before entering your car or your house. (Read here to learn how to properly disinfect your clothes when you arrive home.)

If your child wearing PPE helps you feel more secure, if it puts you and your child in that mindset of cautiousness to better follow all health and safety protocols when in public places, then wearing them could be a good idea.

Keep in mind, though, that the use of PPE should only be added to, and not take the place of, basic health protocols like wearing of mask and face shield, frequent and proper hand washing or sanitizing, social distancing, and for kids, staying at home except for essential travel.

The use of face masks is not recommended for children below 2 years of age. Read the guidelines here.
