The COVID-19 pandemic has affected us in a number of ways. For single mom Florence Vergara, 26, a freelance hair and makeup artist, it meant losing one of her sources of income just when she was about to give birth to her firstborn.
Instead of losing hope, however, she decided to take this time to focus on herself and her now 3-month-old son, Liam. On our Facebook community, Smart Parenting Village, Florence inspired fellow moms by sharing how she was able to trim five inches off her waistline just 10 weeks after giving birth.
Working out at home while caring for baby
In an interview with SmartParenting.com.ph, Florence admits that she was motivated to lose weight after someone told her “wala ka nang abs,” while comparing her to actress Ivana Alawi. “I felt insulted — it had just been two weeks after I gave birth! I replied, ‘Kung abs lang, kaya kong ibalik ‘yan any time,’” she shares.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
On her fifth week postpartum, the new mom challenged herself and started with light home workouts. “Of course, I checked my body if kaya ko na ba talaga. But since I’m athletic, I know my body capacity. I did light exercise and after six to nine weeks, dun na ako nag-cardio,” she says.
With the community quarantine in effect, Florence’s workouts were done at home. She also made sure to work out only while her son, Liam is asleep, “or any time possible, kahit gabi pa.”
She started with squats, then moved up to skipping ropes twice a day. “Unti-unti, then I made it almost every day. Kahit 15 to 20 minutes lang — ang importante lang sa’kin maging habit ng body ko ang magpawis,” she says.

Florence says that one of her favorite parts about losing weight was doing waist training. During pregnancy, she gained more than 30 pounds and so her tummy sagged after birth (“At ang itim!”). She bought “postpartum recovery shapewear” (also called an abdominal binder) and started wearing it two weeks after giving birth.
“It worked wonders,” the new mom gushed. “What I love about it is the compression — nafo-force ‘yung waist ko to form — and kahit hindi ako nag-e-exercise, normal movement lang and house chores, grabe ang pagpapawis ko. Just make it a habit to wear it every day.”
Florence also modified her diet by reducing her intake of sweets and fast food and eating more vegetables. She also combined juicing with her meals. Since she is still breastfeeding, it was important to stay healthy.
She says juicing need not be expensive. “Naging habit ko ang juicing o pag-be-blend ng malunggay with pipino, kalamansi, and sugar — ‘yun ang pinakamura!” Florence shares, adding that she drinks this concoction everyday.

Eleven weeks or less than three months after giving birth, Florence already shed 12 pounds. And she’s very happy with her post-pregnancy body!
Being a single mom, Florence is extra busy supporting her son. But she counts herself lucky since she has a younger sister who willingly takes over caring for Liam whenever she needs to attend to other things, like house chores or her business.
Despite everything she needs to do, Florence emphasizes the need for self-care and taking care of one’s health especially for moms who have just given birth. “As we become busy taking care of our family, let’s not forget about ourselves. I take no excuse to find time for myself. Importante rin kasi na malakas ang immune system and exercising helps.”
