Happy 2024, Smart Parenting fam!
It’s the start of a new year. Most people have their own rituals at the start of each year. It can be making resolutions, cleaning the home from unwanted objects and bad juju, manifesting the things they want, or simply planning for the coming year. But what about parents and their kids? How can we as parents show our kids the opportunity that each new year brings?
Family meeting right from the start
Perhaps we should take a page from one of Smart Parenting’s 20 inspiring Filipino families: the Kramers. Doug and Chesca’s post to greet their followers a happy new year includes one of their family rituals: a family meeting wherein they spoke to their kids “not just as parents but as accountability partners.”
The couple also shared that their family did two things: “Shared–what can I sacrifice to use our time more wisely? Asked–what can I improve on?”
Each of the team Kramer members then answered. For Doug, it’s patience and understanding, and being gentle with words. Chesca joked that it’s staying perfect, but answered with self-control and patience, and to relax and stop overthinking. Kendra said it’s patience and self-control and to not blow things out of proportion. Gavin also included self-control and patience, and to focus better. And finally, Scarlett answered gentleness and self-control and to listen more.

On a similar note, Patrick and Nikka Garcia’s family also shared their own family ritual every new year: doing a vision board that includes their word and verse of the year. Nikka shares, “Been doing our vision board for almost 15 years now! And it melts my heart to actually see my own kids be part of our Martinez family tradition–we make and present our vision boards with our word of the year and verse as well…This started with me, then with Pat. This year, all three of our girls, next with Pablo.”
Nikka’s IG post includes the whole family showing off their own vision boards with their respective word of the year. For Patrick, it’s brighter. Nikka’s and Pablo’s is treasure. Michelle’s is trust, Patrice’s is better, and Pia’s is loving.
Nikka credits her grandma for the said family tradition.
