Alright, trying to conceive and mommas-to-be, let's talk about this 3-5 minute activity filled with suspense: pregnancy tests.

The Cleveland Clinic defines a pregnancy test as a way to determine if you’re pregnant. It works "by detecting human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a hormone your body makes when you’re pregnant."

According to US National Institute of Health, "One of the earliest written records of a urine-based pregnancy test can be found in an ancient Egyptian document. A papyrus described a test in which a woman who might be pregnant could urinate on wheat and barley seeds over the course of several days: “If the barley grows, it means a male child. If the wheat grows, it means a female child. If both do not grow, she will not bear at all.”

Fast-forward to today. We still use urine in-home pregnancy test kits, and I know that the first glimpse of a pink line (or two!) can be life-altering. So, let’s demystify those little sticks, shall we?

Filipino Mom's Guide To Pregnancy Test: Kinds, Accuracy, and Early Detection

Here in the Philippines, we have a variety of pregnancy tests available. It can feel like a lot, from the ubiquitous drugstore brands to the more discreet online options. So, let’s break it down:

Home Test Kits

Classic Strip Tests. These are budget-friendly options often found in sachets. They're straightforward—dip, wait, read. Generic pharmacy brands are common. They're reliable if used correctly, but timing is crucial.

Pregnancy Test Cassette. This home pregnancy test kit works by detecting human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone that appears in urine shortly after conception. The kit includes a reaction cassette, a dropper for sample application, and a desiccant (used for storage only). Sometimes, a urine cup is provided for collecting the sample, and a detailed instruction leaflet guides users through the testing process.

Midstream Tests. Slightly more convenient, these allow you to pee directly onto the stick. They are relatively popular, though they tend to be pricier. These are also more user-friendly (since you no longer need a container for urine collection) and often boast higher accuracy rates.

Early Detection Tests. Early-detection pregnancy tests are designed to detect the presence of the hCG hormone earlier than standard pregnancy tests. If you happen to be testing too soon, be prepared for the possibility of a false negative. If you still suspect pregnancy, test again in a few days.

Where to Buy: Check brand websites. These are also widely available in local drug stores such as SouthStar Drug, Mercury Drug, and Watsons.

Blood Test

Blood tests can also detect pregnancy, but they're less common than urine tests. According to the Cleveland Clinic, a small blood sample is taken from your arm and sent to a lab. Unlike urine tests, blood tests measure the exact amount of the pregnancy hormone, hCG. This is useful when doctors need precise levels, not just a simple "yes" or "no."

Doctors usually order blood tests in specific situations, like during fertility treatments or if they suspect pregnancy complications. While slightly more sensitive than urine tests, detecting pregnancy a few days earlier, they're more expensive and time-consuming. Doctors also use them to monitor hCG levels throughout pregnancy, as changes in these levels can indicate the health and progress of the pregnancy.

Accuracy and Timing

Now, let's talk about accuracy. No test is 100% foolproof as home pregnancy kits swear by 99% accuracy, but then again here's what you need to know:

Timing is Everything

Most tests recommend waiting until at least the first day of your missed period. Early detection tests claim HCG sensitivity as early as 10 days post intimacy.

First Morning Urine

While tests can be taken any time of day, the concentration of hCG (the pregnancy hormone) is highest in your first morning urine, making it the ideal time for testing.

Pregnancy Symptoms

Watch out for pregnancy symptoms such as sore, tender breasts, cramping, nausea, spotting (or implantation bleeding), food cravings or aversions, and mood swings that accompany a missed period.

Following Instructions

Read the instructions carefully. Each test has specific guidelines regarding timing and how to interpret the results. Tests are deemed invalid if there are no results and need a repeat. According to the Mayo Clinic, "home pregnancy tests differ in their ability to find a pregnancy in people who have recently missed a period. If you get a negative test result, but you still think you might be pregnant, take another test one week after your missed period or contact your health care provider."

False Negatives and Positives

While rare, false positives can occur due to certain medications or medical conditions. False negatives are more common if you test too early.

So what's next?

A positive result can bring a mix of emotions. Take a deep breath, and remember:

  • Consult a doctor. Confirm your pregnancy with a healthcare professional. They can provide accurate information and guidance. Each pregnancy is unique, so it's best to get checked right away to manage expectations.
  • Prenatal Care. Early prenatal care is crucial for a healthy pregnancy. Find a trusted OB-GYN and schedule your first appointment. Prescription of prenatal vitamins and medical advice shall follow suit after a positive pregnancy test result.
  • Support system. Lean on your partner, family, and friends for support during this exciting and transformative time.

Be informed, stay informed

Whether you're hoping for a positive or a negative result, remember you're not alone. This journey is unique to you, and there's support available every step of the way. Sometimes, it may not be from the people you expect, but it doesn't mean you must walk on this path alone. There are medical professionals and barangay health center personnel who are willing to assist you, as well as more than 110,000 moms and dads of the Smart Parenting Village who can offer an ear if you're feeling overwhelmed. (Plus, personal experience and advice if you need one!)

Remember, mommas, knowledge is power. Armed with the right information, you can navigate this chapter with confidence and grace while making sure you are safe (and your baby's safe if you are indeed pregnant).
