After a private 2-year bout with cancer, which caused the beloved actress and singer to leave showbiz and the Philippines, Cherie Gil, has passed away at 59 years old in New York. The news was confirmed by her nephew, Sid Lucero, after various social media outlets broke the scoop late on Friday night, August 5. According to PEP.ph, the actor would have preferred for the news to have come from Cherie's children, Jay Eigenmann, and Bianca and Raphael Rogoff.
PEP.ph also reports that Cherie's brother, Michael De Mesa, was on set when he heard the news and broke down in tears in the car. Michael and Cherie's brother, Mark Gil, was also a celebrated actor who succumbed to liver cancer in 2014. Their parents are showbiz royalty Rosemarie Gil and Eddie De Mesa.

Zsa Zsa Padilla recalled tender moments they shared, including bumping into each other at a restaurant though they didn't end up chatting. Both of them, she recounted, were also in the U.S. when she was pregnant with her daughter Zia Quizon.
Sharon Cuneta paid tribute to her "true screen partner" in an Instagram post, saying she couldn't process the loss, "My heart is in pieces." Sharon and Cherie both starred in the 1985 movie, Bituing Walang Ningning. Cherie rose to supervillain status as Lavinia Arguelles, who delivered the iconic line, "You're nothing but a second-rate, trying-hard copy cat!"

In real life, she was loved and cherished. Cherie is the ninang of Simone, also known as Kakie Pangilinan, daughter of Sharon and former Senator Kiko Pangilinan. Sharon flew to New York to be with her friend in her final moments.
On Saturday, August 6, actress Dina Bonnevie posted, "It is with a very sad heart that I need to say goodbye to a very dear friend this morning. 'Cherie' as you know in French, means 'dear.' That is what you are to me." Sharon, Dina, and Cherie were together in the 1986 movie, Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas.
