Solo parent Carlo Aquino recently made headlines because he confirmed his new love interest, Charlie Dizon, but it isn't the public's comments that bother him. It’s being unable to see his daughter Mithi since November.
At a recent presscon for his new movie ‘I Love Lizzy’ he said, “Ang nakakaapekto lang talaga sa akin is hindi ko nakikita ‘yung daughter ko since November.”
In the interview he doesn’t reveal what exactly happened between him and former partner Trina Candaza, because he continues to wish his ex well.
“Ayaw ko kasing magsalita ng anything against her, ‘di ba? “Kasi at the end of the day, mom siya ni Mithi. Basta nag-reach out po ako. Tinanong ko po kung kailan ko pwedeng makasama, New Year ba, kasi usually ganu’n po, eh. Wala pong sagot.
Carlo says he feels it’s important that his daughter sees both her parents as well as grandparents, or his parents.
“Siyempre importante ‘yung time with me, ‘yung time din with my parents, ‘yung lolo’t lola na senior na, sila mommy at daddy.
“Sana, ‘di ba, mahiram ko naman. Tutal nagpo-provide ako para sa kanilang dalawa, ayoko nang isa-isahin…ng mga kailangan nila, Carlo said.
Wants Mithi to know daddy loves her
Carlo recently gifted his baby daughter with a cellphone because he wanted them to use it to record all their moments together, so she would be assured that her father loves her.
“Nu’ng nakikita ko pa po si Mithi, binilhan ko siya ng cellphone. Na every time na magkikita kami, magbi-video kami ng mga ginagawa namin para eventually makikita niya ‘yon na mahal na mahal ko siya.”
He says he and Trina initially arranged to co-parent their daughter Mithi, but it currently doesn’t seem to be practiced.

“At this point nga parang… ‘yung mga first few months, parang ganu’n ‘yung setup” he said.
“Kasi minsan okay, ipapasundo, ‘yung ganyan, sana talaga alam ko (ang problema). Kasi ‘yun nga, at this point, ‘di ba, dapat ‘yung discussion natin is about co-parenting, kung paano natin papalakihin si Mithi individually?
“Kailangan niya ng tatay, kailangan niya ng nanay. At the end of the day, sa lahat ng mga lumalabas, ‘yung magsa-suffer, sino? Kapag nagkaisip na siya,” he said.
Expert says: Consider the best interest of the child
According to Psychology Today, fathers play an important role in child development especially in the younger years. Fathers can affect a child’s social competence, performance in school, and emotional regulation, writes Jennifer E. Lansford, PhD, a research professor at Duke University, North Carolina, USA.
Fathers also can affect a child’s general wellbeing indirectly. “A supportive relationship between parents is linked to better self-regulation in a child,” the article reports.
Smart Parenting Board of Experts member Dr. Gail Galang, a family and child expert says that when parents who are not comfortable seeing their former partner and the other parents of their child, they must shift the focus off themselves and to their child.
“Parents who have relationship issues with their exes should consider the best interest of their child.
“If it’s only pride that’s keeping mom from allowing dad-and-child days, then maybe she can explore psycho-education to know more about why she should allow regular and meaningful encounters, no matter how brief, says Galang.
Parents who have broken up will have different reasons why they have separated. If there is no life-threatening concern that relate to substance or physical abuse and the decision is because it's the end of a romantic relationship, Dr. Galang's words are worth considering.
She adds, “Many studies suggest that father engagement positively impact children’s intellectual development and reduces delinquent problems later on in life.”
