  • A single father, or dad, is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as "a father who does not have a wife or partner."

Collins Dictionary expands its definition to "a father who has a dependent child or dependent children and who is widowed, divorced, or unmarried."

In more contemporary times, being a single father can also mean taking an active part in raising his children in a co-parenting setup with their mothers.

Here are five single dad celebrities who are either widowed or no longer in a relationship with the mothers of their children:

Albert was with Alissa during Liezl's final moments, as Alyanna and Alfonso were based abroad. He asked Alissa if they'd allow resuscitation for Liezl. But the youngest in their brood said, "Let Mama rest." (Read here)

He's just thankful for the steady stream of work he's been getting and the support of people around him that kept him busy.

More importantly, Albert basks in the love of his children, who are now all living abroad with their own families. To date, he has five apos.

"I worked so hard and missed them so much," he said in Dr. Vicki Belo's vlog. "Now ako bumabawi sa kanila. I cook for them every weekend."

He also makes it a point to visit his children and grandchildren whenever he can, especially during holidays.

The actor, who's now more known as a chef and restaurateur, tries to strike a balance between being gentle and authoritarian to his sons.

"Balance lang palagi," Marvin pointed out in a PEP.ph report. "Sometimes kailangan maging strict, kailangan [din] magluwag nang konti so they would discover... and huwag silang matakot mag-explore para mas matututo sila, because that's how we learn about life."

He noted that he's past the stage of "paghihigpit or pag-iinstill ng values" to his sons. "Ngayon, mas pinakikinggan ko na sila kung ano ba yung naging resulta ng pagpapalaki ko sa kanila."

Wowie de Guzman's world nearly collapsed when his wife  Sherryl Ann Reyes passed away merely a month after their only child Raff was born in 2014.

At that time, he shared on Facebook his feeling of loss and devastion, as addressed to his wife: "Di ko alam kung nananaginip lang ako 'coz gusto ko na magising or kung isang eksena lang 'to sa isang taping ko dahil gusto ko na tapusin para makauwi na ako sa 'yo."

The dancer-turned-actor added, in apparent despair: "Panginoon, ano po ba kasalanan ko na ginawa at nangyayari to sa akin...Kung meron man po, parusahan n'yo po ako kahit na ano. Ibalik n'yo lng po asawa ko. Parang awa n'yo po...."

As years passed, Wowie eventually learned to cope with the loss of Sherryl and assumed the role of a single dad to Raff, now 8 years old.

"You wanna be a better person para doon sa baby mo," he said in an interview with PEP.ph. "Kasi siyempre, gusto mo maging proud siya kapag malaki na siya. It gives you more reason na maging mas maayos iyong mga desisyon mo sa buhay.

"Unlike before na single ka, happy go lucky talaga. Okay lang. Pero ngayon, iniisip mo na kaagad anak mo. Especially ngayon, dalawa lang kami. Palaging pag ako magdesisyon sa buhay ko, career-wise o kahit ano pa, iniisip ko anak ko."

Wowie, who's busy these days giving Zumba lessons and tours, is thankful for the support of his family and in-laws in raising Raff. He admitted being a solo parent is difficult. But with the help, especially of Raff's grandmothers, everything becomes manageable.

Paolo Ballesteros plays an active role in raising his only child Keira Claire, though the 13-year-old girl lives with her mother.

They have constant and consistent communication, as evidenced by Paolo's social media posts flexing Keira's achievements in school. They even share the same birthday: November 29.

This is how the actor and TV host describes his parenting style: “Strikto ako, eh. Makulit din ako, pero pagdating sa anak ko strikto ako."

He went on explaining, "I have my mga pamangkin din sa bahay, anak ng kapatid ko. Mas lenient ako sa kanila kesa sa anak ko, kasi parang iniisip ko, wala namang pwedeng ibang dumisiplina sa anak ko kundi ako, di ba?"

He added, "So I think I have to do that part bilang isang parent kasi otherwise paano matututo?"

Paolo has said in interviews that he doesn't hide his sexual orientation to Keira, though he hasn't fully discussed the matter to her. The Eat Bulaga! host, who's also a drag performer known for his makeup transformations, came out as gay in August 2019.

"Luckily, my daughter is a bright kid, eme. So, wala nang ano 'yun, wala nang problema," pointed out one of the single dad celebrities on this list.

In fact, Paolo watches episodes of RuPaul's Drag Race with Keira when they get together. He is now the host of that Hollywood TV franchise's local spinoff, Drag Race Philippines.

Or cute snaps of them together, such as the times Jake joined Ellie in Siargao, where she spends half her time to be with her mother Andi and siblings Lilo and Koa. (Read here and here.)
