Tips for parents with two under two
Get your toddler involved in your daily routine
Have your toddler help you with household chores and caring for your baby. Being helpful towards Mom, Dad, or their younger sibling has a big impact on your toddler's feeling of self-worth and sense of responsibility. It also helps limit their jealousy as you both get to bond together!
Prioritize the essentials
Even the best-laid plans can go awry, and that's okay! This is a big adjustment for you and your family, and meeting both your needs and your children's needs is the top priority. It's fine if your house feels less organized or a bit more chaotic than it used to. Take it one day at a time, and give yourself grace to find your rhythm.
Invest in a good sling or baby carrier
If you want to skip the stress of chasing after your active toddler while carrying your baby, we suggest 'wearing' your baby throughout the day! Using a baby carrier helps you and your newborn bond, at the same time, it gives you free hands to handle your older child. Plus, it promotes breastfeeding!
Do weekly meal planning
Quick meals are crucial when you have little kids who decide they are hungry all of a sudden. Meal planning really helps because it lets you have something ready to go and takes the stress out of figuring out what to make for yourself and your spouse last minute. Try making big batches of ulam or snacks, freezing them, and reheating when you need them later.
Don’t be afraid to separate the kids
Your toddler and baby have different needs, so it's okay to enlist the help of your family to care for them separately. Spending time with each child alone, especially the older one, can also reassure them that having a new sibling doesn't change how much you love them.
Rest when you can
Constantly handling a super-active toddler while having a baby in your arms is no easy task. It might be hard to adjust to the lack of sleep if your newborn wakes frequently at night and your toddler is an early riser who's up all day. So, stick to a sleep schedule and always get some rest when you can. Don't be afraid to ask for help or get a babysitter when needed.
