  • Parents, we feel you. Based on Google’s top trending topics in 2020 in the Philippines, among the popular how-to searches involved math!

In the top 10 trending how-to searches, “How to divide fractions?” comes in at number 6, and it’s immediately followed by “How to solve quadratic equations?”

It is perhaps safe to say these searches are coming from parents with kids in grade 6 to 9 (of course, they can also be the students). For many who are math-challenged, where else do you go for answers. (This story on how to teach math to your kids may be helpful.)

From donning the teacher's hat to learning module issues, distance learning has caused its fair share of headaches among Pinoy parents. In fact, “first day in school,” pertaining to virtual education, makes it to both the overall trending searches list and the news list at numbers 9 and 4, respectively.

Google Trends Top 10 for How-To Searches

    1. How to make dalgona coffee?
    2. How to wear a surgical mask?
    3. How to compute BMI?
    4. How to boost the immune system?
    5. How to make leche flan?
    6. How to divide fractions?
    7. How to solve quadratic equations?
    8. How to make pancakes?
    9. How to apply an SSS calamity loan online?
    10. How to prevent COVID-19?

Taking the top spot on the how-to searches list is the procedure in making dalgona coffee (here is a dalgona coffee recipe from Yummy). The whipped drink made with instant coffee, sugar, and milk debuted in an episode of a South Korean TV show that aired in January 2020. But it did not become viral in the Philippines until COVID-19 hit and the country went into quarantine

Two other food-related queries made it to the Top 10. They are both adored by kids and grown-ups alike: leche flan (at number 5) and pancakes (at number 6). So kitchens from all over had been busy churning out the sweet dessert and breakfast staple throughout 2020.

The rest of the popular searches had something to do with COVID-19. “How to wear a surgical mask?” is at number 2, while “How to boost the immune system” at number 4 and “How to prevent COVID-19” at number 10.

Also related to COVID-19 and the pandemic it caused is “How to apply an SSS calamity loan online?” at number 9. A lot of businesses either closed shop or scaled down, so those workers affected availed of that specific loan program. (Read the story here.)

The lone entry from the health and fitness field, “How to compute BMI?” takes the third spot. Computing the body mass index (BMI) is a reliable way of determining whether a person has too much body fat.

It means many Google users wanted to know if they had become overweight or obese. After all, this longest lockdown has kept us at home, stress eating and too anxious to move.

People searched for how to divide fractions. If we were to interpret what no. 7 means above, however, they needed more help, thus, you get fraction calculator.

We can also guess most kids had this for homework in Chemistry: the difference between homogenous and heterogenous mixture.

A quick Google suggests heading to Elmhurst College for this detailed explanation.

“A homogeneous mixture has the same uniform appearance and composition throughout. Many homogeneous mixtures are commonly referred to as solutions.

“A heterogeneous mixture consists of visibly different substances or phases. The three phases or states of matter are gas, liquid, and solid.”

    Hang in there, parents!
